Isak Dinesen/Karen Blixen! Out of Africa! You might really like her if you haven't read that already. Also a lot of kinda fable/fantastical short stories, very baroque and interesting.

I haven't read Ouida, I know about her because I've read some older writers who refer to writers who were popular but fell out of fashion -- Marie Corelli, E.D.E.N. Southworth, Alice and Viola Meynell, Gothic authors, etc. etc.

OSCEOLA, that was who I was thinking of re Dinesen and her father, not Ouida. DAMMIT.
