I'm so sorry you had some derailing events. I can totally commiserate; I had a baby right before I started my Ph.D. and severe post-partum that lasted for years. It took me almost ten years to finish it, but I finally did! My diss is Victorian and about a writer named Ouida.

I have to admit that I don't know much about disability studies and I'm not familiar with contingency as you're using it here. It sounds like a fascinating project, though, despite my ignorance.

I absolutely love Wilkie Collins. Have you read Dead Secret? One of the protagonists is blind, and a great deal of the narrative focuses on how he handles becoming blind and how his girlfriend/wife helps him to deal with it. I don't know if that would be useful for your project or not, but even if not, it's a hell of a book. I thoroughly enjoy the mystery.
