We are only about halfway through the season, so please no spoilers for future eps.
Trish
I think Trish's struggle with her career and Griffin is really interesting. Ratings on her show are down because she wants to do real journalism instead of the fluffier pieces that her audience craves. I hate that she turns Griffin's proposal down, but I think it shows a lot of self-awareness that she realizes she doesn't want to marry him; she wants to be him, have his career. I am also so relieved that Griff is not a bad guy; that scene where he's appearing to snoop through her stuff really worried me until I realized that he's planning the proposal. I still have hope they might end up back together by the end of the season.
I like that Simpson is watching out for Trish; I hate that he died so quickly after the reveal, but that has to happen for her to find his drugs. Her descent into addiction is so well done and so difficult to watch. I think she is really going to hurt a lot of people and burn a lot of bridges, Malcolm especially. Not to mention, that her supply is not unlimited; she's going to eventually run out, and then she'll have to decide whether to get clean again or turn to some other drug like she did in the past to get over the withdrawal.
I think Trish's assault by the show-runner when she was a teen is intertwined with her addiction; I think she uses drug and alcohol to handle that trauma.
Jeri
Wow. Just wow. Carrie Ann Moss knocks this whole season right out of the park. I mean, her anger and despair at being diagnosed with ALS, everything she's doing to handle it (contemplating suicide, screwing her partners, trying to get inside IGH in case they can cure her) is incredibly well done. I love that even though she is an amoral, Machiavellian character, the show still manages to tinge her with a smidge of sympathy.
Foggy's cameo where he offers to help her! *smishes him* He is such a good guy even if he spends The Defenders mostly being a dick to Matt.
Trish and Jess friendship
"You often need protection from your vagina."--bumper sticker, yes?
I love how Jessica puts on a brave face and is happy for Trish even though the idea of Trish getting married clearly makes her feel isolated and weird. I love how she drops everything always every time to protect Trish. I love the role she plays in getting Trish help for her addiction in their late teens/early twenties.
Jessica
First off, that back story--damn. I mean, Kristen Ritter is an excellent actor, but you could really see her acting chops shine in the flashback episode. Her facial expressions are more open, she smiles more, the way she walks is different. It is astonishing to see the transformation.
I think what gets me in the gut about that flashback is that it isn't losing her family that breaks Jess. It fucks her up and she has problems, but she's still able to form relationships and be happy and experience joy. Kilgrave doesn't help, but losing Sterling is what turns her into the Jessica Jones we meet in season 1, that bitter, stoic, angry closed off person.
I really, really like the insinuation (which may become more explicit as the season concludes) that Jessica's anger management issues are a product of the treatment that saved her life. I hope they explore that more.
I saw it coming a mile away but glad she makes up with the super and ends up having a more positive relationship with him.
What I did not see coming a mile away is that IGH monster is Jess's mom. OMG! What a fucking reveal!!!
What's Next?
IDK
I don't think Jess will be able to forgive and reconcile with her mom.
I think Jess and Trish are going to have a huge falling out, and I think it will be about Trish hurting Malcolm. I even have fears that Malcolm might end up dead.
I think Jeri is going to get her IGH cure, and I think it's going to fuck her up. LOL
I think something might happen to super and kid; definitely think the season ends with them estranged.
I kinda worry the season's going to end with Jess totally alone, all her relationships destroyed. :(
