1. Emma got a 1390 on her second SAT attempt, improving by 50 points! I am so proud of her. My baby's in the 95th percentile. LOL And now that's completely done, and she doesn't have to think about it ever again. She improved her scores on the essay, too, to straight 6s. However, I don't think the SAT essay says anything about whether someone is a good writer or not. First, I know she's a good writer; I've been reading her essays for her college classes, and they're really good. Second, years ago when we were struggling for money, [personal profile] lyr helped me get a job scoring SAT essays, and I hated it. The rubric doesn't actually privilege good writing. It rewards students for using big vocabulary even if they're using it wrong or their essay is bloated. Clear, accessible and straightforward writing gets dinged which is a huge shame.

In related news, OMG is applying (JUST APPLYING!) to college stupidly expensive. We've spent several hundred dollars on it thus far getting transcripts sent and test scores sent and the application fees. Blergh.

2. Escape to the Chateau continues to delight. It is the ultimate in pandemic watching. Here are these insanely creative people--Dick is an engineer, and he can build or fix anything. He's also a chef and gardener and delights in cooking. Angel is an interior decorator, but she makes so many of the things she decorates with. She comes up with these ideas that would never occur to me in a million years but are so freaking cool. And so the whole show is about them making and fixing and crafting, and it's just so satisfying to watch them transform this ancient chateau into something utterly beautiful. Also, they are just so besotted with each other. They adore each other, and it's a joy to watch. It makes me feel sappy and happy every time I watch.

3. I got a Christmas card from [personal profile] isabellerecs!

4. Okay, I am about to commit heresy here and say that episode two of season three of Jessica Jones just might be my favorite episode of the series so far.

spoilers for episodes 2-3 )

5. Holy shit! I've got 4 Yuletide gifts! I am so preemptively grateful!
lunabee34: (yuletide: star on tree by liviapenn)
1. I just finished my Yuletide story, except for the tags and summary which are proving rather difficult. On to a treat!

2. I just got my first Christmas present of the year from [personal profile] amejisuto --a book of poetry which I'm really excited to read (The Princess Saves Herself in This One by Amanda Lovelace).

3. I'm reading Sylvia Plath: A Critical Study by Tim Kendall. [personal profile] kore, have you read this one? Do you want me to send it to you when I'm done? IDK anything about Plath, so also IDK how good Kendall's takes are.

4. Several weeks ago, Fiona and I started watching Escape to the Chateau on PBS. It is an utterly delightful show, and Fiona really likes it. Well, last week, it didn't come on, and google is failing me, but it looks like PBS isn't going to be carrying it anymore. Thankfully it's started coming on HGTV, so we can still watch, but it comes on past her bedtime, so she was a very sleepy monkey on Saturday night. LOL She's also gotten into Hometown on HGTV; I really like this one. It takes place in Laurel which is about an hour and a half north of where I grew up, and I really like the husband-wife designer duo.

5. We started the final season of Jessica Jones.

1. I decided to do a Percy Jackson series reread before I reread Byatt's Possession. I don't want to get author fatigue, and Riordan is pretty much a 180 from Byatt. My palate is cleansed! LOL

Percy Jackson series )

2. We took Fiona to her first movie in the theater yesterday, Toy Story 4. I think I have probably seen bits and pieces of the Toy Story movies, and I have osmosised a lot about the series, but I've never watched a full movie. This one was really cute, very funny and sweet. I cried like twelve times, and Fiona loved it. Forky's trash sequence was Fi's favorite part. :)

3. We finished Jessica Jones season 2! spoilers )

I am totally unspoiled for season 3. I probably won't watch it for awhile; Josh and I have switched to Daredevil, and we'll be mainlining Stranger Things as soon as Emma gets back from her vacation with Josh's sister. I have seen on the flist that general reactions to JJ season 3 have been negative, so I'm all eeeep.

4. We watched the first three episodes of Daredevil season 3. spoilers )
lunabee34: (star wars: earnest leia by insomniatic)
1. Fiona turned six on Monday. I can't believe she's that old. It is such a surreal feeling watching your kids grow up, and by surreal, I mean guaranteed to make you feel extremely old. LOL

2. We are going through a re-org at my university, and our chair has been promoted, leaving that position vacant. I am really gratified that multiple colleagues have suggested that I apply or assumed I was throwing my hat in the ring and expressed support for my candidacy. I have worked extremely hard to build my professional reputation, and that vote of confidence feels really good. I'm not going to apply for two reasons. I'm not ready to give up my flexible schedule. I actually wouldn't mind the 12 month contract part; you all know I get really antsy and bored over the summer when I'm not working, so that part of it would probably be good for me. It's the 40+ hours a week part that I'm not interested in (and it would be + because the job would involve a fair amount of travel among campuses). I would have to exercise either before or after work, which is a problem for me in either direction. I also want to be flexible while Fiona's still so young. I want to be able to attend her events and pick her up from school and etc. The second reason is that I just don't feel ready yet; I have gotten a good foundation in how the upper echelons work by serving on Senate for many years and chairing and serving on university-wide committees. I could do the job at this point, but it would have more of a learning curve than I'd like. Ideally, I'd like to be Assistant Chair for awhile first and get experience that way. If the Assistant Chair position ever comes open, I will 100% apply for that position, but I will probably wait until later in my career to try for Chair.

3. Josh is away for an out-of-state conference, so Emma and I started watching Stranger Things on Sunday night. We have one episode left. LOL I haven't blown through a TV show like this in a long time. I actually watched the first four episodes when it first came out, and I just stopped for some reason. I am boggling at myself now because it's so good and so gripping, I don't know why I did that. All I can think is that I must have been overwhelmed by how much TV we were trying to keep up with at the time and anxious about all the child harm/trauma.

spoilers for Stranger Things )

Don't spoil me for the season one finale or season two please!

4. The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye by A.S. Byatt )

5. spoilers for the last three episodes of Lucifer )

I am extremely satisfied with this season, and I really hope we get another. Does anybody know if there will be another season?

6. spoilers for Jessica Jones season 2 episode 11 )

Does anybody know where The Defenders fits into the Jessica Jones timeline?

Please don't spoil me for JJ season 3. :)

1. I met with my chair today for evaluations, and it was a really gratifying conversation. She encouraged me to apply for promotion to full professor next year and told me that my vita is very, very strong in all areas except scholarship; if I can get an article published this year, she thinks that section of my vita will be in line with expectations. I have worked my ass off in these last ten years, and it is so gratifying to hear my boss say that my teaching and service and community outreach are exemplary. I have an article under review at a peer reviewed journal right now; I suspect it's going to be rejected (I already got a revise and resubmit, and they're taking way longer to get back to me on the revisions than they projected, so that seems a bad sign to me), but I've made my peace with that. I'm going to submit the article I'm in the process of writing about the camp I created for the local high school students, and I'm going to submit a chapter of my dissertation somewhere this summer and cross my fingers. And I might try sending the article that's out now somewhere else if it gets rejected; IDK. In any event, feeling really good about my work right now.

2. Which is good because physically I feel like shit. I assumed when I started taking the vitamin D that it wouldn't take me long to start feeling better. And in that first week, I did start feeling better. I see now that it was entirely due to placebo effect. I feel so tired and worn down and like I could just pass out all the time. I have no energy, and exercising is such a struggle. The only noticeable effect I have from taking the D is that when I take it each week, within a few hours and lasting for about a day, my eyes are much less dry and vision much clearer. And then it tapers off and they get dry and blurry again. Even though taking it doesn't make me feel better or more energized, by the of the week when I've got a day or so left before I can take it again, I start feeling I've been beat up. This just sucks so hard. Everything I'm seeing on the internet says it takes a really long time to get over a D deficiency (and I think it had been building for about a year before it was detected), but I'm so tired of feeling so tired. It seems like a whiny complaint to have. I'm ambulatory; I can work; I'm not in pain. But my mouth and eyes are so dry, and I'm so bone tired, and I have brain fog, and I'm depressed and sad. Woe is me. :(
