Moar Jane Austen

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
When I first read this as an undergrad, I liked it the least of all the Austens (probably because of the almost total lack of humor coupled with the lack of a compelling villain or villainess). But on this reread, I find myself appreciating Anne much more than I did before and enjoying the story of a love thwarted--not by a schemer or a villain--by someone who truly wished only well for Anne.
I'm so happy for Anne to have her happy ending because her family is worse than even Fanny Price's and that's saying something for sure. I sure do love that one sentence dig at the end that lets the reader know that Elizabeth ends up utterly alone with only their father and her horrid pretensions for company. LOL
I also love the Crofts and their ideal marriage (as well as the Musgroves senior) and that Lady Russell can admit when she is wrong and love Captain Wentworth like a son.

YULETIDE UPDATE: I posted treat number 1, finished canon re-read for treat 2, and hope to start writing it tomorrow. I have an excellent idea!!

Date: 2018-11-21 01:45 am (UTC)Anthony Head was a great Sir Walter! And Cousin Walter is a real threat because for a while he looked like a good guy. I don't think I've seen a pro novel about Anne Wentworth's shipboard life. I'm not versed in Austen fanfics (apart from writing some) but I don't think there are a lot about that either.
BTW I have a book called "Hen Frigates" that says that not only was it common for women like Mrs. Crofts to accompany their officer husbands, but that ships frequently had a lot of women aboard as wives/girlfriends of crew members, cooks, laundresses, hookers, or in combination roles.

Oh, I bet Giles was fabulous in that role. I can just picture him.
