A Map of Days (Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children, #4)A Map of Days by Ransom Riggs

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was a very pleasant surprise for the reader (not for Jacob) in which the shine rubs off much of what Jacob has previously held dear. In this book, Jacob and his peculiar friends deal with the fall out of defeating Miss Peregrine's brother. Turns out the ymbrynes aren't all they're cracked up to be; granted, Miss Peregrine seems to always have the best interests of her charges in mind, but the rest of them are condescending at best and rude at worst. Like Jacob and his friends, I sincerely don't understand how they can genuinely believe that beings who are more than 100 years old are children. Now that the threat of the wights and the hollowgast is basically eradicated, the ymbrynes are starting to look like power hungry despots.

When Jacob finds his grandfather's secret workshop, he's thrust into the middle of American peculiar politics which are complicated and dangerous. He makes new friends and enemies and has to decide what to do with his grandfather's legacy. It ends on a hell of a cliffhanger, so I will be eagerly awaiting the next installment.

Library of Souls (Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children, #3)Library of Souls by Ransom Riggs

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I had remembered this book as having pacing problems or some other issue that made me like it less than the first two books. Happily I remembered incorrectly; I mean, I definitely didn't like it as well on the first read, but darned if I know why now. It's just as tightly plotted and well paced as the first two. The characterization is good and stays on the trajectory set by the previous installments. I'm not sure what my initial deal was.

I don't want to give away any of the book's secrets, but many disparate threads from the previous two come together in very satisfying ways. And I absolutely love the ending. It would have been a wonderful stopping place, but I'm glad there's a fourth volume.

I'm about to start the fourth book for the first time, and I hope I like it as well as the first three.

Hollow City (Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children, #2)Hollow City by Ransom Riggs

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

It must be the third one where the pacing goes off this rails because this second book is just as tightly plotted as the first.

In this sequel, Jacob leaves his family and life in the twentieth century behind to throw his lot in with the peculiar children who are trying to save their headmistress. I really love the world building; the idea of time loops that allow time travel is extremely cool, and I love the addition of peculiar animals to the mix. I don't quite understand how the aging forward thing works with the time loops, and I can't decide if that's a genuine plot hole or if I just don't get it.

Really enjoyed this re-read.

This is an AU where BtVS is taking place in SPAAAAAAACE, and I absolutely love it. This kind of AU is so hard to write, and [personal profile] gloss totally nails it. The way she translates the BtVS events and characterization into this new setting is a lot of fun to read. Check it out.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children, #1)Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I absolutely love the conceit of this book--here are these weird photographs and an explanation for them that involves peculiar children and time loops and evil monsters on the rampage. I feel like the subsequent books don't ever quite capture how tightly written and plotted this first book is; this beginning novel is just so well done. I really like Jacob's narrative voice and the way the mystery unfolds. I'm looking forward to re-reading the next books.

2. Oh, man. I got glutened somehow. I mean, that's the risk I take not keeping a totally gluten free house, but I had forgotten how wretched it feels. I've only been glutened a couple of times in the house since I went gluten free, so mostly it's fine, but I must have gotten a crumb or something at some point.
:(

3. I ran 1.25 miles today. I am coming to the conclusion that doctors are probably not going to be able to figure out why I'm so tired all the time and that this is now my normal and that I can't let it rule my life. I want to run, and I'm just going to have to do it whether I'm tired or not. Because I'm going to be tired. The end. *sigh*

4. I signed up for Yuletide! I'm already bookmarking letters for potential treats. I am so stoked. I can't wait to get my assignment.

5. I graded and left extensive feedback on two classes worth of 1101 essays in a little less than 26 hours, and several of those fuckers had gotten all inspired and written close to 2000 words! I am an English professor goddess! Worship me with tea and elegant paper goods!

Now, I'm starting on the Fionavar Tapestry. Somebody (I think Henrycat, maybe) loaned me the trilogy, and I started reading the first one and didn't finish it for some reason. After that, I'm going to read Garth Nix's Old Kingdom trilogy.

I don't know why, but I haven't read very many books this semester, so it has been wonderful to start reading them again. What I have mostly been doing with my spare time since Christmas is reading FFA (not even commenting really, just reading the finished posts) instead of reading books or fic or writing it myself or posting something here. It's become a habit I want to break, I think. I successfully quit going to fandomsecrets several months ago, and it's been a relief to have that time back. Everyone in the comm was very nice to me; I had great interactions there, but I spent a great deal of time there and didn't get a lot of conversational return out of it. I'm starting to feel the same way about going to FFA. What I really want to be doing is talking to y'all and writing fic; I don't know why I keep wasting my time passively reading something rather than actively creating material myself.

So, to serve those interests, let's talk about books, baby, and also two movies.

I just finished:
