while watching Star Trek: the Motion Picture, they say things like, "That Cartesian duality is a total bitch," and "Did I ever tell you about our presentation on Zora Neale Hurston's Seraph on the Swanee where we identified Earl as a prototype of Wolverine?" *hearts friends*

If you like slashy icons, check out [livejournal.com profile] jjjean65's new icon journal [livejournal.com profile] pervy_icons. Not only is Jean a sweetpea, she finds more amazing pictures than any other icon maker I've seen.

[livejournal.com profile] shannon_730 has started a new comm, [livejournal.com profile] fic_search to do just that in the Buffyverse. With the volume of fic searches I see in [livejournal.com profile] bloodclaim alone, I think a comm like this is certainly in order.

While talking to [livejournal.com profile] hermionesviolin, I was reminded that the first bit of fanfiction I read, EVAH, was by Annie Sewell Jennings. I think I found it on All About Spike (Imagine my surprise to discover that she has a functioning lj [livejournal.com profile] anniesj, with a flist of 999. Wow. *boggles* Does she just not participate in Buffyverse fandom anymore or something? I never see her linked to [livejournal.com profile] su_herald. Also, adds a new dimension to the term BNF for me). In any case, it was a bit of Spuffy called Angels of the Silences. I haven't revisited this fic again since that initial reading, but I was inspired to hunt it down. It's absolutely lovely and bleak and still a damn good read, just like all her offerings on the site. I remember thinking, "People write stories about this show I love that is gone forever and ever, and they bring it to life again, and I didn't know this for why?" The second thing I read by her was her Spanderverse. This link is to the last fic in the series; I've linked it so because she's saved the parts to her mems out of order and the proper order is listed at the beginning of this post. Anyway, Spanderverse blew my mind. This was the first male slash I had read EVAH. And it was really exciting to think of these characters in my favorite show getting along in ways I hadn't really considered while I was watching the show. Thus began my nearly overwhelming Spander obsession, which has in past months been tempered by other Buffyverse pairings and a healthy dose of Firefly love. So, I'm wondering, what were your first reads in your fandoms (I know several of you have quite a few), and what affect did they have on you?

Firstly - thanks for the pimp. :)

Secondly - my first reads in fandom... geeze, we'd be here for a while... but here goes :
Highlander - monica - Domesticity series. Duncan/Methos. My introduction to slash! - the effect... I started writing fanfic - gen at first then slash. (though I was always writing, now I knew what to call it).
Sentinel - too many... - Legion, Alyjude, Bast, Lyn... The effect? Um, some of them are now personal friends... and I did introduce Lyn to slash... go me!
A Knight's Tale - Not many writers in this fandom. Hey, I am one of the few! lol! The effect... I started the AKT Archive over four years ago, [livejournal.com profile] akt_slash this year and most recently became a [livejournal.com profile] fanfic100 participant.
Buffy - I can't remember who I first read but I'm a spander gal. the effect... I started writing again after a long dry spell. Oh and I met you!! *g*

Always happy to pimp. :)

You've also been involved in one fandom or another for quite some time, so naturally you've got quite a list. It's neat that you are the front wave of AKT fandom. You can tell your children you're leaving them a legacy. LOL

Fandom really has introduced me to the best people, including you.

Oh, what great memories you've revived!

Hubby was watching BtVS but I was lukewarm. Then I saw 'Once More With Feeling' and was forever hooked, particularly on Spike. I do love a good musical. I thought it was incredibly clever and well-done. Searched around the 'net and discovered the Unofficial James Marsters site (which, sadly, doesn't exist any more). They had a link to Allaboutspike, which, of course, I clicked on. I found Anna S's Season Noir there and realised fanfic exists. The Buffy!world was my lobster!!

I moved to obsessive reading of Spuffy (Nautibitz being a fav) then naturally gravitated to [livejournal.com profile] sabershadowkat. After inhaling her Spuffy I decided to click on her other pairings. Spike/Angel. *gasp* I adored it.

Having gone through every Spangel she'd ever written, I tentatively decided to try her Spander, though I didn't like the thought. An OTP was born. I found other writers who wrote my Boys and acquired an LJ through the nagging of [livejournal.com profile] entrenous88. Thank you, Jess.

I'm still gutted that Saber moved away from the Joss!verse. :( She was a great adornment to it.

I don't think [livejournal.com profile] anniesj can be the same Anna S. She's too young to have been writing such mature fic several years ago. Her fic is very good, though.

I know this is a long comment but ... you asked. LOL

Aren't those icons Suki made a scream?! *g*

The only Spuffy I've read is [livejournal.com profile] anniesj's and then the one piece by [livejournal.com profile] nautibitz for [livejournal.com profile] club_joss, but I really enjoyed them. I always like it when [livejournal.com profile] club_joss gets me to read something I wouldn't otherwise.

There's just too many Annies and Annas in fandom. LOL There's Annie Sewell Jennings ([livejournal.com profile] anniesj), the Anna S. you mention, and isn't [livejournal.com profile] eliade also an Anna? *is thorougly confused*

I love it that [livejournal.com profile] entrenous88 convinced you to get an lj much like Ame and Suki convinced me. :)

Kitty, can you send me an email? I realized today that I had your old one saved in my address book instead of the new one, and I'm almost ready to send that Firefly piece to you. I've also misplaced your snail mail address, and I wanna send you a Christmas card.

[livejournal.com profile] anniesj moved from Spuffy to boyslash to Harry Potter to...I don't know what she writes now. Her flist is so huge because last fall, she wrote something anti-Bush in her LJ that brought the feds to her door. *eek*

Anna S.=Eliade.

I read Spuffy this weekend - "Six Foot Deep". I didn't love it. But B/A/S stuff by [livejournal.com profile] netweight is *fab*. Check it out.

Ah. I thought it must be something like that with [livejournal.com profile] anniesj. Moving on to other fandoms seems pretty common for many writers, especially ones that have been around for quite some time.

I cannot believe that the feds find it necessary to monitor what we say in our blogs. *boggles* People are starving globally, people are dying of AIDS in record numbers, and my hometown is still all blown to fuck and back by Katrina, but our government thinks it's necessary to monitor Livejournal. Imagine the resources that must take.

Thanks for the Anna/Annie clear up. :) And the rec. *trots off to read*

She has had lots of people reading her LJ for ages, though. And as I recall, she locked down her journal for a while after the fed thing and then stopped doing so. Also as I recall from the time, she was fairly certain some specific person (whom she didn't name) with a grudge against her reported her, and she actually completely agreed with the Secret Service's decision to investigate the complaint -- it is their job after all -- but posted about it partly 'cause she posts about her life and partly as a word of warning to remind people that anything we post publically (and really anything we post flocked) can potentially come back to bite us. See these two posts (http://www.livejournal.com/users/anniesj/2004/10/27/) for further explanation.

Checking her UserInfo just now, she only has 255 people listed as friends, though she's friended by over a thousand people. (Says the detail-oriented Research Girl.)

Details are good. I guess I wasn't using the term flist properly. I meant that at the time I looked, she had been friended by 999 people, which is probably the largest amount in that category that I've run across in my small time on lj. :) Her writing certainly commands a following. :)

How horrifying that someone would do that to her. Thanks for clarifying the situation.

Yeah, I was definitely surprised to see "1001" next to "Also friended by" (she has "Mutual Friends" separated out) as that's high even for BNFs (though [livejournal.com profile] thebratqueen has about as many). I figured you had meant the number of people reading her, but since that's not really how flist is used (you meant Friends Of List rather than Friends List) I figured I'd go all uber-clarificationy.
