I am constantly blown away by how giving and generous a place fandom can be. This is a place where strangers make other strangers happy JUST BECAUSE THEY CAN. Pretty cool, my friends. Woolsey approves.

First off--INSTA REC! I have been so swamped with faculty orientation that I haven't even left her feedback yet, but you guys have to read

executrix's My White Knight. The story is Mal/Simon, PG-13, and Firefly meets The Music Man. I know Exec has been really stoked about this story as she was writing it, and just a paragraph in, you see why. It's great reads.

In other news, starting a career is tiring and confusing. LOL I sort of feel as if I've been thrown into the deep end of the pool to a certain extent. This is true of every new job, I know. I felt that way as a Grad Instructor and I certainly felt that way at Security Check (may their names be damned forever more!) and I know that the overwhelmed, "OMG! WHAT DO I DO? AAAAACK!" will pass. And probably more quickly than I think.

But right now, it's a lot to deal with. Just filling out the paperwork (PPO or HMO? Do I need short term or long term disability insurance or both? Tax forms, dowhat?) is head-ache inducing.

Another thing that's interesting to me is how different this job seems from the faculty side of things. My mom has been a professor for nearly forty years. I grew up on a university campus and I've been at Ole Miss for seven years. I thought I knew academia. But it's surprising how different it feels on this side of the table, how much MORE is going on that I just wasn't aware of as a grad instructor, how many more facets to the job there are. I am psyched because this job is going to be incredibly rewarding and fulfilling, but also a little anxious because, well, I'm me. Ha! I'm already worried about my professional development and performance evaluations and I haven't even performed. *g*

There's another thing that I'll post about later because I want to lock it. Not a big thing, just a thing you guys need to help me figure out. I have such success with flist intervention. You guys rock.

Target Practice by

This is early season fic, before the team was Team. It's hard to remember sometimes that there was once a time when they didn't all know each other like the backs of their own hands, when they were still learning about each other and each other's cultures. This fic is an excellent reminder.

1. I signed up for Remix! This will be the first big multi-fandom ficathon I've participated in. I've done the odd challenge or ficathon here and there but nothing that's such a fandom institution. I'm excited but also a little nervous.

2. Some anonymous awesome person said very nice things about me in a Valentines Day Meme I almost didn't see.

3. Because of my dialup I have lots of trouble looking for icons. I have really been wanting a Keller icon and I can't find one I like enough to upload. Part of the reason is that I think of icons as permanent; I try to only upload the ones I feel very strongly about. The rest of the reason is that I have this black and white and red icon aesthetic going on and most of the ones I have seen of her are colored. So, have you guys seen any icon posts with textless black and white icons of Keller? Or, I know that lots you enjoy making icons yourself. *bats eyelashes* I'm interested in black and white, textless icons in which Keller is distinguishable from Kaylee. For that matter, if you guys know of any great Caldwell icons that would also be appreciated.

4. Finally, I got some down time and my Bates/Kavanagh LOVE EACH OTHER SO MUCH trilogy is currently stalled at, "PETER!!!! OMG Finally I know what name to moan BECAUSE IT'S PRINTED ON YOUR SHIRT!" So, prompt me people. SGA or SPN, please. Give me a pairing and something to go on. A scenario, a song, a quote, some adjectives, a sexual position. LOL

It's that time again, the day Lorraine devotes entirely to Sam and Dean and SamandDean and also sometimes John (especially when he's evil!John with serious personal space issues in "Devil's Trap"). I just made a rec post, but I'm still feeling the love.

So squee with me.

2. Excellent meta about the direction the show might take in which it is revealed to me that when you click down on the special features menu on the sixth disc, Dean's eyes turn yellow! OMG, Kripke, you evil genius! If this is foreshadowing, you're good.

3. Meta question I've been pondering: Are Sam and the other psychic children's powers given to them by the YED or are their powers something innate (that they'd have anyway, even if the YED didn't come along) that the YED is exploiting for his own purposes (perhaps even manipulating in some way)? If the source of Sam's powers is the YED, then why was he chosen to receive them? The stars aligned and he was in the right place at the right time? If the YED's defeated will the powers disappear? If Sam's powers are innate, then he's got an extra layer of angst to deal with--the tragedies of his life aren't so much thrust upon him as part of who he is.

4. I have a plot bunny that is languishing in its wee little hutch that somebody needs to adopt, pronto. What if Dean's one love wasn't Cassie, but Cassius? Or, um, something less Roman senator and more like Cash? And what if Sam never knew that Dean had had relationships with guys before they go to save Cash from the Monster Rig? And what if it makes him jealous? And then he and Dean totally do it?!!!! Oh, somebody write this. It would be so good.

So, tell me something SPN. Seen a good icon lately? Read a fic I need to read? Have a meta question of your own or a plot bunny or a moment in the show to squee over?

Okay, here's the deal. I am on dialup and I just cannot trawl for icons successfully because most people post them in batches of eleventy million and I can't load the page. *tears out hair in frustration*

So, here's where you come in. Please rec me some shareable SPN icons. I prefer black and white or else the darkish tones that the show uses. I'm specifically looking for ones with Dean, Sam, John, Dean and Sam, the Impala, and guns, but I'm open to anything.

Harry Potter

Night-Blooming Heartsease by Julad. Snape/Neville This fic begins just after PoA and imagines a war-torn Potterverse. Although the version of Snape in this story is not my own personal version of the character, I think that the Snape here is very plausible and convincing. The dialogue sparkles and Neville is just glorious. The fic is very touching (there was crying) but never maudlin. This is not very explicitly sexual. In fact, it's not really about the sex at all. It's much more about characterization and motivation, which is why I think it's such a success.

Lustre by Julad and Calico. Harry/Draco I have to admit that I don't get this pairing yet, so my enjoyment of this fic doesn't stem from the ship. What is really nice about this piece is the insight into Draco's character and the way his family operates. The sort of Old World arrangement of marriages and gifting, etc, is really fascinating. The house dynamics of Slytherin are really great here too--dark, seductive, sinister, everyone using sex as a tool. Finally, the descriptions of the snake in this fic are so beautiful, so exquisitely wrought that I wish I could see the snake in real life.

The Night Watchers by

teaspoon14 Harry/Ron/Hermione Harry's still having terrible dreams and Ron and Hermione comfort him. This short piece is a very, very tender first time piece that gives each layer of the sandwich equal time (which is important to me because I don't like reading threesomes where one member seems utterly extraneous). The best word for this is sweet.

Diamond by Polly Burns. While in jail, Andrew explains his relationship with Warren to Jonathon.

Watson Was a Woman? by Rex Stout. This essay explores the gender of Sherlock Holmes's sidekick.

Rough Diamond by

lyrstzha This is a re-telling of Beauty and the Beast that is such a joy to read. It is slightly dark and has all those wonderful turns of phrases and images that I've come to expect from Lyr as a matter of course. It's also told with the wink-wink-at-the-audience narrator that I so enjoy.

Is Simon ever given an age canonically (or in the Visual Companion to Serenity or something like that)? I would estimate that he's between 10-12 years older than River.

Inara fic: Prologue by

femmenerd Canonical pairings. I think this first chapter is really interesting. It has a nice rhythm and Inara's observations seem right for her character. I'm interested to see where this goes.

Jayne/Wash by

thunder_nari Adult. Very nice Wash voice and very hot ficlet. I think I have a thing for knives.

Slow Burn by

rinalin Simon and Zoe. Very touching look at post-Serenity characters. I wouldn't call this a shippy fic; it is, however, about connection.

Catching Snowflakes on her Tongue by

wisdomeagle Simon and River as children. This is very beautifully done. It's as if River is some kind of immutable force that Simon must contain or appease.

A Vice of Mercy by

executrix I continue to be amazed of Exec's work, and this is no exception. A very well done backstory for Book.

Of Swords and Flowers by

hermionesviolin The character of Anamaria explored. I don't even remember her from the movie, but Hermione has given her a rich background. This is such a lovely read.

while watching Star Trek: the Motion Picture, they say things like, "That Cartesian duality is a total bitch," and "Did I ever tell you about our presentation on Zora Neale Hurston's Seraph on the Swanee where we identified Earl as a prototype of Wolverine?" *hearts friends*

While talking to

hermionesviolin, I was reminded that the first bit of fanfiction I read, EVAH, was by Annie Sewell Jennings. I think I found it on All About Spike (Imagine my surprise to discover that she has a functioning lj

anniesj, with a flist of 999. Wow. *boggles* Does she just not participate in Buffyverse fandom anymore or something? I never see her linked to

su_herald. Also, adds a new dimension to the term BNF for me). In any case, it was a bit of Spuffy called Angels of the Silences. I haven't revisited this fic again since that initial reading, but I was inspired to hunt it down. It's absolutely lovely and bleak and still a damn good read, just like all her offerings on the site. I remember thinking, "People write stories about this show I love that is gone forever and ever, and they bring it to life again, and I didn't know this for why?" The second thing I read by her was her Spanderverse. This link is to the last fic in the series; I've linked it so because she's saved the parts to her mems out of order and the proper order is listed at the beginning of this post. Anyway, Spanderverse blew my mind. This was the first male slash I had read EVAH. And it was really exciting to think of these characters in my favorite show getting along in ways I hadn't really considered while I was watching the show. Thus began my nearly overwhelming Spander obsession, which has in past months been tempered by other Buffyverse pairings and a healthy dose of Firefly love. So, I'm wondering, what were your first reads in your fandoms (I know several of you have quite a few), and what affect did they have on you?
