I meant to make a longer rec post but I got pressed for time, so here's the short version:
Boy Meets Girl, Girl Cures Cancer by
smittywing Katie Brown-centric fic (Katie/Rodney) This is just lovely. I adore glimpses of why the expedition members chose to go to Atlantis and this is a brilliant backstory for a character we see relatively little of on screen.
Fat My Dust by
cesperanza McShep PG-13ish Oh my, does this writer have a handle on John’s character; this is a very perceptive fic. I feel as if I’m peeling back layers and getting a peek at what’s hidden inside Colonel Sheppard. I particularly like the way John’s method of handling new situations hasn’t changed since he was a child. Rodney is also fabulous here—scared and angry and hurt. Yum.
The World at Large by
cherryice Ford-centric gen (background McShep) Oh, oh, Ford. He is one of my favorite SGA characters and when he stopped being a regular cast member it made me very sad. This is another backstory fic—it’s about prejudice and opening up to your friends and the bitterness of lost opportunities.
Fourteen Years by Hth Ronon-centric, Adult This is Ronon adjusting to life on Atlantis. I love the parallel structure here—we learn what Ronon feels his first year of running and next his first year on Atlantis and so on. The juxtaposition of the two timeframes works really well. I think this author has the best handle on Ronon and the intricacies of potential backstories for him of anyone in the fandom I’ve found so far.
The Crane Wife by
mz_bstone Wow. Just wow. This fic is told from Miko’s point of view and it is an amazing look at strength and determination and the power of humans when we band together. This is about friendship and loss and moving on together when you don’t have the fortitude to move on alone.
