I am more of a commemorative plaque
Jun. 17th, 2020 11:15 am1. My laptop died last night. Fortunately, two days ago, I decided to back up everything on the device, including pictures. I also have been emailing my work to myself at the end of the day when I'm done, so I didn't lose any work. I am so so grateful to Past Me for doing those things. The computer repair place in town is only open a few days a week and at odd hours, so Josh is taking it tomorrow to see if it's salvageable. If not, I'm buying a new laptop. My dean gave me permission to work in the office until the situation is resolved, and I have an old kinda dodgy laptop here that I think will suffice for grading and for dreamwidthing. So, inconvenient and irritating, but not the end of the world. I am kinda proud of my zen here.
2. Yesterday, I started getting emails from google about my mom's gmail account; apparently years ago when gmail started requiring phone numbers and etc, mom put my email as her recovery email which I had completely forgotten about. I was worried that someone had hacked her account, but no. She was screwing around with it because she wasn't receiving emails anymore (and this also shows that in the ten or fifteen years or whatever since she listed me as her recovery, she hasn't signed into a new device or changed her psswd *headdesk*). Turns out, she has never deleted anything from her email EVER; so after hours and hours of deleting emails, she's good to go again. LOL Also grateful that had an easy resolution, but my adrenaline was high for a little while there.
3. Signal boost:
goss has put up a poll Calling all BIPOC. I'm curious about how many of us are out here still, whether actively posting on DW or simply lurking. Maybe you are wondering too! So I am putting up this poll, in the hopes of reaching out to and connecting with as many BIPOC fans here on DW as possible.
4. Emma finished Newsflesh. She really liked the first book, but said the next two were just "fine." LOL Now she's buried in Steven King again.
5. We watched Knives Out last night. Damn, that was a good movie. I had seen people saying they didn't like Daniel Craig's Foghorn Leghorn accent, but I loved it. I don't think that he was trying to deliver an accurate Southern accent (although you do run into people in the South who actually talk like that which can be weird even for Southerners LOL) but rather an affectation. Anyway, loved the casting and the pacing and the humor and the final shot of the movie. Excellent ending.

executrix sent me the most amazing birthday package: books as always (plus one of them has been on my to-read-for-Ouida list and a second in the pile also mentions Ouida) but the coup de grace is a perfume kit! It has about 10 enormous vials of perfume that are intended to be blended into different combinations. Each vial on its own is a perfume to test, and then there's all the permutations to try. What a thoughtful and exciting gift!
