Just a word on AO3:

I got my account early there because of working on TCW, and I uploaded one fic and forgot entirely about it.

Well, y'all have been posting about the archive and the one fic I uploaded got a comment (A COMMENT! ON THE ARCHIVE SITE! Unexpected and awesome. I don't remember commenting visibly on the site being a part of the archives I posted to in my early fannish days, but who knows. I don't remember lots of stuff. Anyway, neato.). So I decided to upload all my fic there starting from the beginning. And within one day, I've already gotten two more comments (on my old and not so great fic; yay!)

Can I first say how rocking the "import fic from existing URL" function is? THERE IS A FREAKING LEPRECHAUN IN THE COMPUTER AND SHE KNOWS WHAT YOUR STORY NOTES ARE AND WHAT YOUR TITLE IS AND OMG ALL YOUR HTML. *is floored and grateful* I mean, it's a buttload of fic to transport over there and it's gonna take a huge time committment. But this makes it so much easier.

I don't think I need to wax poetic on the tagging over there because y'all have already been doing that.

I have had to literally sit on my hands, though, while uploading the fic. I'm doing it chronologically so, wow. "The man" and "the vampire" kinda abound and when I re-read the first sex scene I'd written I sorta laughed until fizzy water fizzed out my nose. SO VERY VERY BAD. It's like The Sound and the Fury narrated by Benji as a frat boy. *full body shudder* But in the interest of preserving the work as it was written, all I did was correct a typo I found. *hangs head*

Anyways, AO3 awesome!!!

No one needs to see my old fiction. It is horrible. Congrats on your comments!

Heeeee. I very much feel the same way after having revisted my own, and yet, I think it's the English major in me that goes, "MUST PRESERVE THE JUVENALIA!"

LOL

Every time I've tried the URL importer it had trouble, so I've just been doing it by hand, which actually isn't that difficult.

More than comments, I've been excited to see a few of my fics get bookmarked.

From lj, it's been no problem at all. I still have to go in by hand and erase the header because I find those irritating to read in archives; all that info is already there and doesn't need to be duplicated. When I tried to import fic from a website, no dice.

It's not that it's hard to do it by hand, it just seems so overhwhelming. LOL AND I SHOULD BE WRITING YULETIDE! Man, last year, I knocked that shit out for a gold star, and now I'm floundering.

Yay for bookmarks!

Okay, I'll admit total ignorance here and ask what is AO3? (hangs head in shame.) I'm guessing it's a public fic archive of some sort.

AO3 is the Archive of Our Own. It is a project under the umbrella of the Organization of Transformative Works (OTW). I fear I am greatly simplifying, but basically, some fans got tired of being worried about being TOS'ed from a site or the strikethroughs and the boldthroughs--and somebody, I think maybe [livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock said that we oughta just own the damn servers.

So AO3 is an archive that is created by and run by fans and we own the servers and nobody can ever TOS us or delete the fic we've posted there.

Here's the link to the FAQ: http://archiveofourown.org/archive_faqs

It's in open beta which means it's invite only right now. I only had one invite but I gave it away already. If I get more, you'll be first on my list of recipients. I don't know when the archive is slated to open for everyone, but I hope it won't be long.
