Last night's SPN was very boring and stupid. BUT, I have a theory about this season's Big Bad and a little bit of squee for the next episode.

So, Mother of All. The short list that comes to mind is Eve (Hawwah, "mother of all living"), Gaia, Tiamat, Lilith, Echidna. Eve I immediately reject because she is the mother of all men, not of All nor of all things monstrous. And while she has been tied to the monstrous throughout history, I just don't think she fits the bill. Gaia does give birth to All and to all things monstrous, but she herself seems very benign and passive. She wants to protect her children, and though she does enable Cronos to castrate Uranus and Zeus to dethrone Cronos, you can interpret her actions as restoring the social order and punishing Uranus and Cronos for being bad leaders. Lilith is more promising as she is said to have given birth to hundreds of evil spirits after leaving Adam and could be construed as the mother of all that is monstrous; however, the show has already used her, and I don't think they'll come back to that character again. Echidna is a monster who births monsters, but they're the monsters of classical Greece (Sphinx, Cerebus, Hydra) that haven't really had a place on the show.

As I told [livejournal.com profile] tabaqui after that episode aired, my number one candidate is Tiamat, Babylonian mother goddess whose story is told in the Enuma Elish. She is the mother of All, and she gives birth to monsters, specifically Scorpion-Man (who's got sharp teeth like a vampire), Dragon and Viper, and Mad-Dog (werewolf?).

But *shrugs* Who knows who she'll turn out to be. They don't really have much time left in this season to handle a new adversary. I'm pretty sure it's going to be faintly ridiculous no matter who she ends up being.

As far as next episode goes--SQUEEE! More than any other show, SPN consistently hits my narrative kink buttons. "Changing Channels?" Kinda my personal manifesto. I've been pretending I've been dropped into TV shows (as myself with the knowledge that this is a TV show) for going on twenty years. Still my preferred method of fantasty. And the inverse is true as well--TV character ends up in my living room ready to fall in luuuurve. LOL I think they'll do well with this episode. I've enjoyed all the fourth wall breakage they've done so far (although I know that's not a universally shared opinion).

Interesting thoughts. :)

I am SUPER psyched about the ep. I think it's going to be like an orgasmic explosion of fandom... uh metaphorically of course...

Anyway. Hi by the way!!!
