My eyes hurt from crying

lunabee34So, I am a Lord of the Rings fan. I've read the books multiple times since childhood, loved the animated Hobbit and watched all the movies including deleted scenes multiple times. But I've never wanted to read fanfic for the series. I may have read a short piece or two at some point, but I don't think so. I've only got one LoTR rec in my tags, and that's a quick crossover executrix did with Firefly.
I was talking with someone on AO3 a couple days ago who linked me to a LoTR fic that I've just spent all yesterday and last night and little bit this morning reading and bawling my eyes out over.

Legolas/Arwen, Legolas/Aragorn, Arwen/Aragorn; adult; long
Y'all, this fic got to me, hard. The basic premise is that Legolas falls in love with Arwen and spends two thousand years being her casual lover because Elrond has made him swear that he won't pursue Arwen romantically. Then Legolas meets Aragorn and finally feels like he can move on and love another. He and Aragorn start a relationship, but Legolas will never tell Aragorn that he loves him because he feels like he must first tell Arwen about his new relationship or he'll be betraying her. Aragorn and Arwen meet, fall instantly in love, and LEGOLAS SPENDS THE REST OF FOREVER ALONE. He loves them both so much and would do absolutely anything for either of them, and so he stays by their side until they both grow old and die, and he never tells either of them the depth of his feelings for them. AND LEGOLAS AND GIMLI ARE BFF AND THEY LOVE EACH OTHER SO MUCH AND IT IS HEART HURTY AND THEN GIMLI DIES *SOB SOB* AND LEGOLAS IS BY HIMSELF FOREVER AND EVER BECAUSE HE IS IMMORTAL. I was literally crying heaving sobs by the end of this. All the misunderstandings and miscommunications, the very real possibility that Legolas could have had everything he ever wanted if he had made different choices--so gut wrenching, my friends.
I'm a go put some ice on my face now.
