I opened my WIP folder and was surprised to find a whole bunch of documents in there that I barely even remember starting. Excerpts beneath the poll.
HP excerpt
[This consists of fragments of books and interviews written after the war]
In an interview given in the seventh year of her tenure as Headmistress of Hogwarts, Minerva McGonagall remarked that the Sorting Hat had become increasingly temperamental in the years since the defeat of Voldemort. “Even before the Battle of Hogwarts,” McGonagall said, “the Sorting Hat’s opening poems had all stressed unity among Houses, but it has grown more adamant over time.”
SG-1 excerpt
[this is set in the aftermath of "Cold Lazarus" in which an alien takes the form of Jack's dead child]
“I guess he—it?—he thought he was helping.”
Sara laughs, some ugly sound she never remembers making before Charlie died. “Helping? Jesus, Jack.”
Jack looks at the floor. “Yeah.”
SGA excerpt
[this is set in the aftermath of the Replicator attack on Atlantis]
He kneels down beside Elizabeth and helps her sit up, holding on to her until she doesn’t feel like she’s going to collapse. John looks terrible—dark circles under his eyes, his knuckles scraped and swollen. Elizabeth realizes his hair is longer than she’s ever seen it; it licks the top of his collar in the back, but she doesn’t know how it’s grown so long so quickly. Fear starts to snake through her belly. “What happened?” Elizabeth says.
Firefly/BtVS excerpt
[this is set post-Chosen]
When Xander comes to, the barrel of a gun is pressing into his temple.
“Who the hell are you, and what are you doing on my boat?” Caleb says.
“He’s here to find me,” River says.
“He’s Alliance?”
“Ain’t from the Core, that’s for sure,” Jayne says. “Not missing an eye like that.”
“But look at his clothes, his jewelry, and he’s got some fine treasures in his pockets. Belongs in a museum or something.”
“He ain’t soft, whoever he is. Look at his hands.” Zoe turns one over, studies the calluses. “He works.”
Voyager excerpt
[This is set immediately after “Investigations,” the second season episode in which Tom Paris pretends to break with the Voyager crew in order to discover who has been selling them out to the Kazon. Commander Chakotay is not aware of Tom’s deception, and Tom behaves very insubordinately towards him during the episode to maintain his cover.]
After that, Tom stops smarting off to Chakotay; hell, he stops joking around at all when the commander is around. He does everything by the book—every procedure flawlessly executed, every protocol followed to the absolute letter of regulation. Tom is uncomfortably reminded of his teenage quest to prove himself to Admiral Paris, but he shrugs off the comparison. Chakotay is not his daddy; he’s his commanding officer, and while Tom doesn’t think they’ll ever be friends, maybe Chakotay can learn to respect him just a little. After all, Tom’s got the next seventy years or so to convince Chakotay he’s not just a screw-up, not just a waste of space.

I started writing it four or five years ago after I started reading Voyager fic and discovered that Tom/Chakotay is inexplicably the juggernaut slash pairing. Holy Harry/Snape, Batman! So then I started thinking about how I'd write the pairing.
I've got almost 1200 words.
