Downton Abbey

We only have one episode left in the series, and I almost can't believe it. I am very glad the show runners decided that wrapping up loose ends and not leaving anything hanging was the way to go although I am a bit reeling with the rapidity with which some of those ends are being neatly tied.

Isabel: Violet tells her about her conversation with Lord Merton's incipient daughter-in-law. I love how shrewdly the Dowager cuts to the heart of why DIL wants Isabel and Lord Merton together, and I love that Isabel is not going to let her feelings for Lord Merton put her in a terrible position. I love that when Isabel meets with the DIL herself, she makes very clear to DIL that her machinations are not convincing.

Thomas: even after Andy tells the truth that Thomas has been teaching him to read, that doesn't seem to have much affect on the way Carson views him; it does appear to make the others think of him a bit more kindly. Just as soon as Molsley says that Thomas complimented him, I turned to Josh and said, "Being nice to Molsley is the suicide barometer for Barrow," and sure enough, Thomas tries to commit suicide. I'm glad Baxer found him in time, and I'm glad Robert and especially Carson regret their behavior toward him. I see a hint in this penultimate episode that Thomas will actually change now and not be so self-destructive and unkind toward others.

Mary: Wow. So when Mary says, "it feels as if we're trapped in some witch's curse" at the racetrack, she completely echoes my sentiments about her character. She is so so awful and has grown ever increasingly more awful since Matthew's death; I started out really disliking her character, moved to liking her a great deal under Matthew's ennobling influence, and am back to squarely disliking her again. Except that she's so strong and beautiful and hiding such fierce emotion under that chilly facade that I can't help rooting for her even when she's being an utter bitch. The death at the race track was so awful. I was not sold on Henry until that moment when he tried so valiantly to save his friend and then was so wrecked at his death. I get why Mary broke up with him, and that scene is one of the finest that Mary has in the whole show (along with the one where she tells Tom she can't be a crash widow again). But then in the penultimate episode when she relentlessly destroys everything Edith holds dear and can't even admit to herself why she does it--so much rage. I could not believe that she tells Edith's beau the truth about Marigold. I'm so glad Tom and Edith both got to tell her off soundly; I think for once that what they say gets through to her. When Edith tells her that she'll be nice again for a little while because she's happy and then she'll be mean again when it wears off, maybe just maybe Mary can take that to heart and change. I certainly think she was affected by Edith telling her that one day all they will have is each other and that she's willing to forgive because of that. I definitely think the parallels that she and Thomas both blatantly draw between his situation and hers lend credence to the idea that Mary will try to change. The scene where she goes to Matthew's grave and then Isabel gives her her blessing is so beautifully done; I'm glad she marries Henry.

Edith: I also wonder if Edith forgives Mary so readily because she isn't sure about marrying the newly minted Marquis (or however the English spell it). All that talk about his mommy sure raises red flags for me, but I do wish Edith had gone on to outrank them all LOL. I am so sorry for Edith to have everything ripped out from under her yet again. I feel so sorry for her. I can't tell if the guy is going to change his mind in this last episode, or if the show will go out with Edith making a life for herself in London.

Carson and Mrs. Hughes: Loved the scheme Mrs. Patmore devised to teach him a lesson about cooking. LOL "You're my curmudgeon."

Molsely: Oh my heart. "I don't think I deserve anything. Perhaps I was wrong." I am so glad Molsley did well enough to be a teacher, and we all started crying when he connected with his students and showed us what a fabulous teacher he's going to be.

Misc: The Dowager saying that Tom is most sensible. Oh how times have changed. LOL Violet giving Robert a doggie! Yay! Mrs. Patmore's house of ill repute is hysterical. Love the advice columnist being Sprat!

So, it'll be two weeks before we watch the finale, and I'm on tenterhooks. I hope nobody dies, I hope Edith has some goodness in her life (I would love to see agent change his mind and ask her to marry him again), and I hope we get to see the Bates spawn.

Gotham

These last two episodes have been pretty awesome. Love Sophia playing Oswald. She's so good at it. I can't wait to see what her end game is for him.

Ed and his search for his intellect cracks me up. Smartiva! LOL

I wonder what special powers Barbara has been given by Ra's al Ghul.

I don't like it when Jim and Alfred fight.

I like that the show is giving Bruce a specific reason to be very anti-killing; he's done it once now, and he wants to turn his back on that path.

I like that Lee turns up again, and I like that her motivation for returning to Gotham is that she feels guilty for the virus.

Love the Bullock and Jim duo. I was really afraid that Bullock was actually going to die; so glad he survives. My shipper heart squeed when Jim tells Harvey that saving him wasn't a choice. Of course, now they're going to be on the outs since Harvey was also on the take.

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, you're so close to done on Downton! Excitement all over the place. I loved how Mrs Hughes got Carson. Just perfect. Harder than it looks, Charlie! :D

Heart teacher-Molesley so much.

Mary seemed like she was on instant repeat way too often.
