So, I am creating this program where we're bringing freshman high school students on campus to have an English camp, for lack of a better word. It's a single day, they're going to do a writing marathon and a couple of poetry activities, have lunch, and go home. Our mascot is the Knights. I'd like to name this event something that has something to do with knights or knighthood or swords or something else relating to knights, but I'm like Lt. Ford. I don't get to name things. Anybody have any suggestions?

ProvenanceProvenance by Ann Leckie

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I love this book, every single thing about it.

I love seeing human life outside Raddchai space. I love getting snippets of what's happening with Breq and Station from outside POV (although these are few and far between; none of the characters from the original trilogy appear, and commentary is mostly about Raddchai politics).

I love Ingray so hard. She is not a badass. She's not physically strong or a good fighter. She's very intelligent and competent, but she's not a genius either. She is, however, compassionate and astute and willing to sacrifice herself for what she thinks is right. When it's time to act, Ingray acts even if she's afraid and uncertain that she'll be able to change anything for the better.

I love Tic and Tic's relationship with the Geck ambassador. I love the Geck ambassador and how alien she is and yet not (she genuinely loves Tic and wants what's best for him).

Garal is also an amazing character--so strong and resolute and yet compassionate like Ingray.

The premise of the book--the provenance of the artifacts that Ingray's people revere--is such a fascinating way to explore their culture and the way it interacts with surrounding cultures. Questions of identity and nationalism, shared humanity, the impermanence of material objects, and the relevance of cultural symbols abound. I am really hoping that Leckie is going to explore where the ruin glass comes from in subsequent novels.

I read this mostly at the gym, and a number of times, I could not help from laughing out loud or gasping or giving Ingray a tiny cheer (using my active reading strategies, folks), and I am pretending that has caused the students to become more interested in reading rather than thinking their teacher is terminally uncool.

The Epic of GilgameshThe Epic of Gilgamesh by Anonymous

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I'm not counting it when I read excerpts of things for class, but I figure when I read the whole text, it totally counts!

This is not the edition I used (it's part of an e-text), but I read the Sandars translation (which I really like; it's very clean and easy for students to understand).

I have always enjoyed teaching this text because it touches on so many issues that interest my students: fear of mortality, questions about the meaning and worth of life, depression over the loss of a loved one, soulmates. And, of course, I can never read The Epic of Gilgamesh without hearing Picard say, "Gilgamesh and Enkidu at Uruk."

Thanks for the tip on the Sandars translation!

Maybe a joust? Or something referring to chessboards? Or the Chevaliers?

Knight Writers, and you could describe the readings packet as a KITT.
