1. I got a letter from misbegotten with lots of stickers in it! And I got a book package from executrix with several old issues of Parnassus in it; I've been reading the most delightful article on epigrams. The writer has (appropriately) a nice sense of humor. Oh how I adore academic writing that is not lifeless and impersonal.

2. My neuro prescribed me a migraine rescue drug, finally! It's a long process with him, which I completely understand; he only does one drug at a time so that it's clear where any adverse effects are coming from, and Monday we were finally at the rescue drug stage. Y'all, my insurance will not cover this drug at all, and it's 900 motherfucking dollars for only a small number of doses. So that is a hard no thank you. I have called his office and asked for something else but not heard back yet. Also, now that I'm taking 200 mg of the monafidil he wrote the RX for the 200 mg pills, and the pharmacy has to do the preauthorization thing all over again which is just bullshit. I was approved to take the 100 mg pills, so I don't get it. Also, they cost me 50 cents, so they're not expensive.

3. All spring was a dearth of hummers, but in the last couple weeks they have started to come back, not in the numbers of last year, but at least a few. I love seeing them at the feeders and at the butterfly bushes.

4. We just made the first payment on Emma's fall semester. *cries* Y'all, we are so stupid. I mean, it's going to be fine, but I wish we had done more financial preparation for this. I'm glad we're going to be able to just pay for her education without her having to take out loans; that is a luxury and a privilege that I am deeply grateful for. But also we did a really shit job of saving for this, and it's going to be a financially stressful year (I mean, we could not have predicted totaling the car, the brickwork on the house, or all the medical expenses, but still). Thank goodness for Zel Miller and free tuition. Well, it won't be the first time we do a better job with Fiona than Emma the guinea pig. LOL

It is very hard.

We have not always been good managers of our money. And by not always I mean we were shit at it until I'd say about 6 years ago. LOL I think some of that on my part was a subconscious reaction to my parents' extreme thrift when I was growing up (they have since unclenched like a lot), but some of it was just us being dumbasses.

And I can't blame my parents for their thrift though it drove me nuts as a kid/teen/young adult. When you grow up poor raised by parents who lived through the Depression (and my maternal grandma was literally starving at times as a girl), that makes a mark.

4) Hey, you might want to look into Upromise. I didn't do one of the 529 plans, but I did link all my credit and loyalty cards and stuff. I had to put myself through college, and that helped a bit.

We've got a plan thingy for Emma that my parents did when she was a baby. It's for one year. My understanding is that it's a reimbursement. So once she gets through this first semester and passes, we submit some paperwork and we get money for the first semester. And then same for the second. So if we can just make it through this first year, the second should be covered (because IDK how long it takes to get the reimbursement). And the reimbursement should be for more than we've actually spent because it's for everything and her tuition is free. We'll see how it actually goes.

NINE HUNDRED DOLLARS? WTF is it made out of, plutonium?

That is a huge gift to Emma. My parents couldn't help at all with my college education, I took out way too many loans, couldn't pay them back, and it had a really terrible and giant impact on my life.

Of course, he's not going to call me in something different and more affordable. We'll discuss alternatives at my next appointment. I'm so annoyed.

So sorry you can't get that breakthrough drug. That's just awfully expensive. Sheesh. Terrible. I hope you get your other pills approved. Sometimes the red tape at the doctor's is just unbelievable.

School fees are really up there, huh? Sorry about that, love. At least you'll be better prepared next time.

This first semester is going to be like 7500 and that's not counting books and incidentals. *gulps* At least she's not paying tuition.

I did not fully appreciate what a gift I was given by having a free ride to undergrad. That was such a wonderful privilege.

Yes and no. I did get merit scholarships, and I worked hard for those, but the big thing was that I got free tuition because my mom worked as a professor there. It was part of her original contract at the university. By the time I was of college age, they were no longer offering that to the children of employees because so many people go to college now; in the seventies when she started they didn't. But they had to honor the terms of her contract. So I really lucked out.

Oh, man, I can't even imagine the cost of education these days. I still cringe when I think about what it was 30 years ago! *hugs*

It's a lot. I have no illusions about how privileged we are to be able to afford to send Emma to a top tier research university. It's really sobering to contemplate the barriers to access for so many people.
