So, I went yesterday to have the initial consult for my first colonoscopy, and lo and behold, it's happening tomorrow. I mean, medical stuff never goes that fast. LOL So, I'm spending today in the misery of liquids only + prep. Not looking forward to being NPO until the afternoon tomorrow either. But I'm glad to be getting it over with.

Also, the gastro was appalled that I've had no management of my celiac since diagnosis so I'm getting a bone density scan in January, and he tested my antibody levels. If those are elevated, it means I'm getting glutened even if I don't feel bad. Of course, if they do come back elevated, I suspect a certain new housemate is responsible for that.

But the house sale is completely over and the money is in the bank! OMG! So now the relocation may begin.

Celiac is no joke. Wife has it and i'm seriously active in avoiding spreading gluten into her foods. Even manage to ?enjoy? the gluten-free noodles in soups. It's healthy for me b/c i've switched to spaghetti squash for many noodle-y things. Actually found out i prefer the squash to noodles.
Vitamin D3 for bone density. It;s good for all of us "not as young as we'd elect to be" ^(tm) sorts. Good wishes sent your way.

Thank you so much! I got a clean bill of health re: the colonoscopy and I got my antibody test back, and it's normal, so hurray!

My husband and kids are so so good about making sure I don't get glutened. All our meals are gluten free except they sometimes eat pizza (cooked on a special pizza stone reserved only for gluten) and they eat breakfast stuff with gluten and sandwiches with real bread. But anything with gluten on it must be eaten on paper plates that can be thrown away. Nobody double dips re: condiments or sticks gluten hands in bags of chips. And everybody washes hands immediately after touching gluten. I am so grateful and lucky, and I know your wife is grateful to you, too.

FIL is not so scrupulous, and I know he was glutening me and making me sick to start with, but he's gotten better about cross-contamination, and I started hiding my lunch meat, and clearly something is working because the test reveals my immune system is not being activated re: gluten.

Yes! It will help me to feel at peace. I got the antibody test back, and it was normally, so I haven't been glutened lately, but I still feel hypervigilant about it even if it's not happening.

It's always amazing when things move that fast - I find it does tend to happen round the holidays because I think a lot of people make an appointment and then cancel because of other obligations so they're suddenly open.

Best of luck with the colonoscopy!! In my experience, the prep is by far the worst part, so you're getting past the worst of it early. \o?

He was so snarky about the gastro that diagnosed me. He was all, "Anderson and those others. They are mere proceduralists." Sniff. I died. It was so funny.

Wow, that is quick! The prep is awful! Thankfully that's the worst part. I hope everything goes well today.

I . . . did not know that Celiac had to be 'managed'? No one told Pip that, as far as I know. I attended his early dr appts after diagnosis. I wonder if his primary doc even knows this?!! o_O

Well, what this gastro told me, and I was all Duh after he said it is that it's a good idea to periodically check the antibodies because even if you don't feel bad, you could be accidentally getting glutened. If you're on a gluten free diet, they should be normal. If they're not, then you're getting gluten from somewhere. And if they're not normal, then you need to figure out where the gluten is coming from because those antibodies mean your body is being damaged. I know Pip has issues with being strictly gluten free, so I suspect his levels are elevated.

Also, celiac leaches calcium from your bones; this is especially true for people who are sick for awhile before they are diagnosed. This new gastro told me that osteoporosis is often a sign of celiac even when there aren't other symptoms; I know we think of osteoporosis as a female disease, but men with celiac can get it too. My mom was diagnosed with osteoporosis long before celiac, for example.
