We are back (finally!), and so I can share with you both the wonderful story I received and talk about the story I had so much fun writing.

The extremely talented [archiveofourown.org profile] noctaval wrote Vigil for me. The story is a Deb-centric Dexter fic that gives us Deb's inner monologue after events that happen at the beginning of this season. Spoilers for Dexter ) If you haven't already, definitely go check this one out.

In terms of my own story, this Yuletide was a first for me in that I was assigned someone on my flist to write for. [livejournal.com profile] tornyourdress, aka [livejournal.com profile] dress_fic, matched with me on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and she gave me the most fantastic optional details in her Dear Author Letter. She wrote: My absolute favourite exchange between [Garak and Damar] is the "You never told me you had a secret mountain hideaway."/"I was going to surprise you." from 'The Dogs of War', and I'm just fascinated by the dynamic between the two of them in that final arc. They have so much history, and the shadow of Ziyal's death hanging between them, but they're thrust together in the quest to reclaim their planet, and it's just gorgeous. I'd love to see slash here, whether it's with that teasing/flirting vibe of that quote, or a little darker and angstier, or something with a bit of both. If that's not your thing, it'd be great to see something exploring their time together working with the Cardassian resistance and what they think of each other, the situation, Kira, Dukat's new allegiance, etc, or something that explores their pasts.

As you all know by now, this request hits several of my narrative kinks. Peripheral character? Check. Canon compliant? Check. Character study? Check. Angst? Check. LOL

I find Damar a very fascinating character. He appears in twenty-something episodes over the course of several seasons, and while he initially appears to be a very minor character, by the final season, his role has expanded dramatically. He begins his character arc as a stalwart, loyal subject of Cardassia. Damar seems not very bright, not very forward thinking. He follows orders without question. He holds unflinchingly to Caradassian values and beliefs and seems unshakable in his convictions. Damar is not an orator. He's not a tactician. He's not clever or witty or adaptable. He's a soldier, and he's a a good one. Damar follows where others lead. But by the end of the show, Damar has had everything he ever believed in turned on its head. He has accepted a leadership role he never wanted and feels ill prepared for. He has had to sacrifice his personal convictions for the greater good of his people. He's had to revisit previously held assumptions about Cardassia and Cardassian actions, and he doesn't like the conclusions he comes to. I really enjoyed delving into the choices Damar makes and what motivates him.
