Del.icio.us has not changed the way I internet overmuch. I don't have an account myself and I don't use the site to find fic that other people have bookmarked that I might like to read.

But I do check del.icio.us on a regular basis for my own screen name. Oh, yes. That's right. I said it. LOL I wanna see who's saving my fic to their accounts.

In this way I learned that while very few people commented on my SPN/SGA crossover (that I'd labored over for months and am inordinately proud of), a handful who didn't comment at all saved the fic to their del.icio.us accounts. This made me very happy and feel good about continuing to write fic in that universe. Del.icio.us was also the straw that broke the camel's back in regards to my recent layout change. I'd been planning to change it for awhile and then when I del.icio.us-ed myself today, I saw that someone had left me a note telling me they liked the story they'd saved but couldn't find the comment button on my journal to leave feedback. LOL

So, my question to you is--Am I the only person who does this? Am I the lone egomaniac on the flist or are you guys checking yourselves out too?

Well, uh, no, because I didn't know you COULD do that. But I've been known to look myself up in the library card catalog when traveling. And it ruins my day to turn up one of my books in a second hand bookstore.

I've decided to start working on getting into the card catalog myself. :) I'm thinking of sending some stories out and seeing what happens. Probably nothing much, but who knows.

And quite a few people are del.icio.us-ing you, my dear.

I use delicious a lot (especially since I started reading in SPN fandom) and I've been known to look myself up. A time or two. :) I found that it's a lot quicker and easier than using LJ's memories, which while I would pop other's fic into, I never went back to it because it was so cumbersome. With delicious I'm constantly going back to look at things that I've read (I also haunt my friends delicious links, as well.)

*nods*

There are a lot of problems with the way I make recs; I make a post and save it to memories and then there's no way to tell which fics are recced in which post because the subject line won't accommodate all the fic titles. Del.icio.us would eliminate that problem.

I just don't like the way the site looks. Isn't that lame? It seems difficult to navigate to me. Maybe I should just open an account and give it a try. Things are usually not as difficult as they look once you start doing them. Usually. LOL

I do occasionally, and I also check the URL of a new fic to see if people add it. Their search isn't that good, though, so I don't do it too often. For example, searching for kyuuketsukirui, does not get me everything with kyuuketsukirui in the URL. It only gets me anything with kyuuketsukirui in the fields or the tags. So if someone has a tag for the author name or puts the author name in the subject line or the other box, then it will show. And you can't search for a single URL and get everything associated with it, which would be really helpful. I'd love to be able to search for http://kyuuketsukirui.livejournal.com and get hits for everything with that URL (same with http://www.megchan.com), but you can't do that. It sees each as completely separate, even if it's the same domain.

I dislike some of the limits to del.icio.us' functionality (the character limit on the description part being the primary one) but I do really like it as supplement to my actual website.

I've searched for myself a bit on del.icio.us, and had a couple pleasant surprises. Though I also put all my own fic up on del.icio.us on another account (inspired by [livejournal.com profile] musesfool), so the searching is less effective now.

I made myself an account last night after this post, just to play around with the site and I hate it. LOL

First off, I am on dialup. I connect to the internet with AOL. I dl'd the buttons, but I have to open Internet explorer in another window to use them, which makes everything run slower and is a pain in the ass.

Also, the character limit on the description is pretty much a deal breaker for me. My recs are for myself so I can find fics I'd like to read again. I never rec something I don't intend to reread and I need to put a description on each fic that's long enough for me to remember what's going on and what I liked about it. I can't do that with del.icio.us.

Hmm. I use Firefox, but I know I used to get a message that there was a script running that was slowing down my computer or something. I haven't used del.icio.us much since I upgraded to the newer version of Firefox, but I don't think I've gotten that message since. Since I don't use IE I can't really speak to any del.icio.us-IE issues.

I do definitely dislike the character limit. I think of del.icio.us as supplementing my website, though, so I'm willing to kind of roll with it, figuring having people read my not-as-thorough-as-I-would-like-them-to-be recs than not read my recs at all.

As a supplement it works really well, I think.

That's what I really need. A website for my recs. That would be ideal.

Wow, my last sentence kind of fell apart. It should have said something like "figuring having people read my not-as-thorough-as-I-would-like-them-to-be recs [is better than than having them] not read my recs at all." But clearly you just translated :)

I should really contact the Help Desk of my website provider since it's being stupid and I need to either get it fixed or find a new provider for when I'm up for renewal. Were I not having such problems I'd happily offer you a subdomain on my website.

I saw your post where you figured out the website problem and offered me a subdomain. That is really generous of you, Elizabeth. :) Thank you.

I don't know anything about adding information to a website, though. Could you tell me how to do it? Or is it self explanatory enough that I should be able to figure it out?

I'm happy to help walk you through Netrillium's menu to get to generating .html pages. I don't know a whole lot about making webpages look very fancy, but I'll do what I can. Can you give me an idea of what you would want your website to be? Like do you just a main index page linking to separate pages by fandom, or did you have something else in mind?

I don't want anything fancy. Just a place to put recs and my fic. A main index page like you describe sounds perfect. I don't care how it looks at all. I'm only interested in functionality.

I do have a website (which I am very grateful to Jean for!) but she maintains it. I don't have access to it to change or add anything, and I'd like something I can do myself.

I always feel weird asking Jean to do something to it, especially since lately her mom is very ill and she's had a lot of deaths in the family.

Oh, that totally makes sense.

If you tell me what you want your subdomain to me -- i.e., lunabee34ORWHATEVER.athenewriter.com -- I'll set it up and put up a couple preliminary index pages that you can then play with.

Just this morning I was trying to remember when I'd posted a certain thing (those SGA versions of Dinosaur Comics that I photoshopped) -- I'd tagged the first entry but not the second one, so I went to del.ico.us and entered "sga dinosaur comics" and there it was! :)

Not quite the same as vanity googling, but much more efficient than searching through my memories. :)
