Supersymmetry by [livejournal.com profile] lallybroch; McShep; PGish
This fic made me happy, really really happy. I have an inordinate fondness for kidfic in SGA, which surprises me as I pretty much hate it in my other fandoms (River and Jayne herding a brood along the corridors of Serenity squicks me down to the bone). In this fic, John and Rodney's daughter from an alternate timeline finds herself in the Atlantis we know and love as the result of a Gate accident. Maggie seriously rocks, and so do John and Rodney's reactions to this kid that is both theirs and so very very not.

What I love most about this fic is the way John reacts to Rodney's growing martial competence. It makes absolute sense to me that Rodney would do everything necessary to protect himself; his desire for self preservation is rather high LOL after all. If I were Rodney, I'd be on the firing range and letting Teyla kick my ass with those sticks and running like there's no tomorrow, too. What makes this interesting and unexpected is that John can't handle Rodney's skill--it's an insightful look at one of the reaons John is so emotionally closed off.

I love this story; it's so clever, so horrible, so bleak. Rodney finds the instructions for building a quantum mirror and then all the boundaries between alternate realities break down for him. This is a story about going insane, about being made aware of all the possiblities of your life at once, about losing yourself in what was and will never be.

Drabbles are beautiful things, y'all. They are the poetry of fandom--these little slices of story and experience in which every single word is precise and exact and exquisitely chosen. They are paradox by which the strictures and limitations of a form become so freeing; their very economy engenders the creativity that the form should limit. This is one of the best drabbles I've ever read. 100 words and every single one cuts straight down to the bone.

for now (beginning) by [livejournal.com profile] paian; Jack/Daniel; Adult
I've been reading through SG-1 rec lists and honestly not finding as much SG-1 fic to like as I find SGA. One of the reasons is that I feel Jack is an extraordinarily difficult character to write. RDA's portrayal of him is incredibly nuanced, more so than it perhaps seems if you are not thinking way too damn much about it looking closely. Jack is a military man, through and through, but he also realizes the value of disobeying orders for the greater good. He's a joker, a trickster, hiding what he really feels behind one malaprop after another. He's emotionally closed off, unreachable. In these ways you'd think writing him would be a lot like writing John Sheppard. And here's where you'd be wrong. Something about the way RDA plays this character, the way he physically inhabits his body, makes Jack so much more difficult to write than John. Well, [livejournal.com profile] paian gets it absolutely right.

Sam and Vala walk into a bar. Sam and Vala OWN that freaking bar. Girls kicking ass and taking names never ever ever gets old, my friends. Especially when they are as awesome as these two.
