As we are by
lelise; Toy Soldiers; Joey/Billy; PG-13
This story only has 18 comments which is truly a fandom shame. You all know how much I love this movie if you've been reading this journal for any length of time, and
lelise gets the characters pitch perfect: Billy has always been a practical guy. He likes things that make sense to him and that he can take apart and put back together again with his own hands. He doesn’t believe in Santa Claus, doesn’t wish on falling stars and when he was six he watched his mother throw his tooth in the trash and take five dollars from her purse. He sees things for what they are and he doesn’t wish they were different. The bunk slats creak above his head when Joey shifts in his sleep and Billy rubs his tongue against the sharp edge of a tooth and doesn’t make any wishes.
Never Brought To Mind by
queenzulu; Buffyverse; Dawn/Faith; Adult
As
thelastgoodname described it to me, this is the best Dawn story ever and ever amen.

Four Blatant Lies About Atlantis (And One Thing That's Totally True) by
sabinlagrande; PG-13; McShep and other ships
This is a wonderful send up of those fandom cliches such as aliens made them do it, everybody's doing everybody, DADT doesn't matter for the Atlantis expedition, etc. I defy you not to giggle while reading this.
Five Conversations that Didn't Happen by
less_star; Rodney-centric gen
This is Rodney in the alternate timeline of "The Last Man," and every single one of these vignettes hurts until you get to the last one and it literally takes your breath away. I think this is one of the finest stories I've read that is set during that episode.
After Such Knowledge by
harriet_spy; Michael-centric gen
Wow. Just wow.
harriet_spy gets inside Michael's head like nobody's business and examines the implications of what the Atlantis team has done to him. This version of Micheal is not as dark and sinister as the one canon gives us; this is a Michael whose despair is tempered by hope.
Shiny Things by
movies_michelle; McShep; Adult
So this is the one where John is kind of like an OCD crow and Rodney's got the most interesting shiny in a no-fly zone and really, what is John supposed to do? Answer me that. Go forth and read if you haven't already.
Triptych by
mad_maudlin; Rodney-centric gen
This is a tricksy little Russian nesting doll of a story that hinges on that final scene in "Moebius"--the one where there really are fish in Jack's pond. That scene begs the question: what else has SG-1's forary into the past changed? If you like timetravel and paradoxes and swift punches to the gut, then this piece is for you.
A Matter of Spandrels by
nuhiep; Rodney-centric gen
This piece is so short, just a little more than a double drabble, that really to say anything is to spoil beyond measure but it is a character study worth reading.
Ring out the Bells by
queenzulu; Sora/Teyla; G
The last line of this fic is something that fills me with writerly envy. I mean, damn. Why don't I get sent lines like that? LOL Wonderful, wonderful backstory for Sora.
Pegasus Ethics by
fiercelydreamed; ensemble gen
All of these are wonderful, wonderful, wonderful and I would dearly have loved to see them play out on the show. #4 is completely awesome and not only because it stars Major Lorne.
Pyrotechnics by
silverspar; Ford/Sheppard; Adult
This is the all-too rare beast, the Ford fic, and it is magnificent. This is set after Ford begins taking the enzyme and it's a strangely sweet glimpse of a man who has become unremittingly selfish and deranged.
The Subterraneans by
vanitashaze; Pegasus-centric gen
This is a far-future fic, full of myth and legend and little tendrils of fact that can be teased out from both. I love when things come full circle in the fic and Pegasus mounting the same one way, heart in throat, kinda mission to the Milky Way is eleventy million kinds of awesome.
Narcissus by
miss_porcupine; Rodney-centric gen
This is backstory for Rodney, but even more than that it is a character meditation and an exploration of ethics. The writing here impresses the hell out of me.
SPN including Big Bang
She Taught Every Angel To Rearrange The Sky by
luchia13; Dean/Castiel; PG-13
This is the most fun kind of crack--the kind that's not too out there but is still sweetly hilarious and strangely plausible if one turns one's head sideways. Anna and Ellen are about eleventy million kinds of yay here.
Big Bangs
The End of Walls, the End of Ropes by
july_july_july; Gen
Forget the shippy fics; this year's Big Bang was all about the gen and this is such a damn fine example. This is a twisty story, an intricately plotted piece that moves fluidly back and forth in time. It is a shocker of the best kind to learn that the Winchesters owe so much to someone they have not and never will meet. If every time JDM says, "They say that Samuel Colt made a gun," gives you goosebumps, this is the story for you.
SWIFT HOUNDS OF LÚSSA by
acerbus_instar; Adult for violence
This fic goes AU from Andy's appearance on the show. I really like the unspoken comparison between Sam and Dean and Ansem and Andy. The Winchesters are brutal; they are fumbling in the dark toward a thing they don't know and they just make it worse. They misread the situation. They are not unequivocal white knights. Neither is Andy. He's pathetic in many ways, but strong as well and his helplessness and despair and numbness were excellently characterized.
The Silver Ring by
cormallen; J2; Adult
The narrative voice is amazing. It's this lovely amalgamation of Terry Pratchett and Brian Jacques and something that is wholly and irretrievably the author's own. This is a story that is in many ways about the act of storytelling itself. I love the stories that Jared tells; I get chill bumps when he tells the story of Bluebeard's daughter. The plotting here is so intricate and seamless and all the character voices are so vital and interesting.
The Protocols of Friendship by
lizzywinks; J2; Adult
This is another rare beast, the non-AU J2. This is my favorite RPF story from Big Bang this year. I absolutely adore stories that are predicated on misunderstanding, where the characters don't get where the other is coming from and the fic is one slow journey to understanding. There is also a really fantastic conversation with Eric Kripke in the middle of this piece that is truly worth the price of admission alone.
The incestuous courtship of the antichrist's bride by
fleshflutter; Sam/Dean; Adult
This is one of those stories that lives in the interstices between humor and horror, between crack and incredibly perceptive character observation. This story is funny, really funny at times. But it also contains some fairly serious meditation on Winchester-ness and on formulating a set of ethics in impossible circumstances.
I have more of these bookmarked on another computer and will be posting them shortly.
Star Trek Reboot
Leaving With by
leftarrow; Kirk/Pike; Adult
Why is the fandom not innudated with this pairing? It's hot like burning and oh so scandalous and Want. More. Now.
How to Avoid Kicking Puppies and Other Valuable Lessons in Leadership by
sparky77; Gen
Okay, so this has 16 pages of comments. I don't think I've ever seen a fic with that many pages of comments. So, um, yes. You will have read this already. Carry on.
Timeout by
ayalesca; Kirk/McCoy; Adult
I love how Bones is foremost a doctor, not a StarFleet officer and I love the layers to Kirk's motivation for beating the Kobayashi Maru simulation.
Break Down and Tell by
betweenthebliss; Kirk-centric gen; PG-13
In this fascinating subversion of a well-worn Trek trope, Kirk is actually damaged by the mind meld that Spock!Prime clearly initiates out of extreme selfishness. Call it psi-induced PTSD. Chillingly plausible.
Murphy's Law of Jim Kirk Diplomacy by
kiarasayre; Gen; Kirk, Spock, McCoy
That last line SLAYS ME. I love the slash and the porn in fandom so much I can't even tell you but what gets me in the gut every damn time is the friendship between these three men, irrespective of who they might be sleeping with.
Chaotic Systems by
eponymous_rose; McCoy-centric gen
Two guys walk into a bar--yeah, it's that kind of story. *loves loves loves*
So, my favorite author in Trek fandom is
possibly_thrice who has an extraordinary emotional insight and an almost unbelievable way with words. I've never read a single thing she's written that I didn't love wholeheartedly. These next were written by her:
The Hour She First, Uh, Gave The Benefit Of Doubt; Winona-centric gen
P3 writes Winona Kirk like nobody else, burrowing down inside that woman's bones and burrowing out all the brutal truths. Her Winona is my canon now.
The Hero's Lady Widow: Special Edition, Excerpt From The Exclusive Interview! (Three times Winona Kirk wasn't telling the whole truth when she said no to the interviewer, and one time she was.); Winona/George; Winona/Frank
This feels so real to me that I sometimes forget we didn't see it happen.
Torture Would Make Anyone Maudlin, Okay?; Winona/George/Pike; Adult
OM NOM NOM NOM Let's make this the default pairing of the fandom, yes? *nods eagerly*
