in My Child is Adorbs News, Emma is shocked to discover that the words to "Don't Fear the Reaper" are not, in fact, "Don't feel the rainbow."

Now the mockery may commence. I took Ems to see The Mortal Instruments yesterday and totally dug it. I thought it was thoroughly entertaining (and so did she!). Excellent use of CGI; none of the demons or monsters looked fake to me, and some of the CGI work was really beautifully done (as in the fire demons). I also appreciated that the demons and etc. were creepy and disturbing (way more than I had been anticipating actually), without resorting to cheap gore.

I have only read the first of the prequel books, so I went in completely unspoiled for the story and the actors. I loved Lena Headey as Clary's mom (although there's a thing she does with her mouth that she must just do rather than being a part of character work because her mannerisms seemed a lot like Cersei to me, and I think it was the mouth thing). I liked that Luke turned out to be a good guy. I loved Simon and Jace and Isabelle. And Magnus Bane was a hottie-hot-hottie, as Cuzco would say.

I am very surprised that the story went to the twisty incesty place, and I wonder if Cassie Clare has the guts to go through with actually making Jace Clary's brother. I suspect not; I suspect they will end up not being siblings and will end up together. Right now, I'm pulling for Clary to end up with Simon and Jace to end up with Alec and me to end up with Magnus Bane, but IDK if that will happen. Well, I'm reasonably certain about the last ship. LOL

Some things that I think the film adaptation did pretty poorly now that I'm reading the book:

1. Establishing Hodge's character and explaining why he'd collude with the enemy

2. Actually showing that Alec is in love with Jace; that isn't demonstrated at all in the movie; it's just Clary accusing Alec of loving Jace with pretty much no evidence; it was a bit jarring; it makes sense while reading the book, however.

Overall, I really enjoyed the movie, I'm enjoying the book, and looking forward to seeing what happens in the series. Don't spoil me past City of Bones, please!

Say what you want about Cassie Claire (and I know there's tons to say), her problem has never been that she can't write an engaging story.
