I was having the most awesome conversation with
thatyourefuse about the series in which she said:
[Sir Malcolm is] obsessed to the literal point of madness with recovering [Mina's] physical body and undoing a violation done to it, except we've SEEN how he plans to go about doing that and it's pretty fucking invasive in and of itself; does he plan to chain her up in the basement? That's still pretty fucked up.
I thought this past Sunday's episode did a very good job of drawing a stark distinction between Sir Malcolm and Ethan and the way they approach Mina's supernatural illness and Brona's rather more mundane one. One of my favorite parts of the show is when Ethan confesses that Brona is dying and Sir Malcolm offers to send her to the countryside to the best sanitarium. I love that Ethan's response is that they'll stay at home because he'd rather give her dignity in her final hours than all sorts of invasive and potentially humiliating medical interventions that ultimately will fail. I think
thatyourefuse's interpretation of Sir Malcolm's character is spot on, and I think we're supposed to in that moment recognize that Sir Malcolm has already abandoned any pretext of preserving his daughter's dignity.
I love that this show continually surprises me. I love that Caliban just randomly shows up and offs Van Helsing. I love that they didn't go the expected route and let Brona die in the street, only to be picked up by Caliban or Frankenstein for Caliban's bride. I love that Ethan is taking care of her and that he can forgive her for causing a scene at the theater in her fear and her anger at a life cut short and so full of pain for all its brevity.
I think that Sir Malcolm is starting to see Ethan as more than just the loaded weapon, the hired gun. And I'm just waiting for Ethan's dad or an emissary from him to show.
Josh and I both squealed when the episode ended immediately after Sir Malcolm says something like, "I haven't been entirely honest with you, Vanessa. Let me tell you the truth. . . . Oh, you're too busy floating on the ceiling for that. Mkay."
I love Dorian Gray more and more and more and more as the show goes on. I'm so glad they're not showing us his portrait. I think that's a smart move. And how awesome was the moment when Vanessa looks directly into the camera lens. She wants to put mirrors behind the world!!!! *swoons*
I don't think this show could be better if it tried.

Date: 2014-07-08 02:52 am (UTC)(Also like SHIT that was the last of Mina. We have seen her do so many things other vampires don't seem to have the capacity for, and Van Helsing doesn't seem to have TOLD anyone else about the staking/beheading thing...)

Date: 2014-07-08 02:55 am (UTC)Also, I don't feel like Sir Malcolm actually confessed whichever thing it is that he was going to tell Vanessa before she started levitating. Like, I think there's still some secret going on there that we still don't know.
I also love Ethan. And yet am perplexed by him. Because he is the goodest, kindest character on the show and I love him; and yet, I think he is just randomly killing people when he's a werewolf. We're supposed to believe that he kills the mom and the kid in the first episode right? IDK I don't want to believe that. LOL

Date: 2014-07-08 02:56 am (UTC)I hope you're right.
I don't want to be done with her at all.
Because one little ear nibble is not enough Mina/Vanessa for me. LOL

Date: 2014-07-08 03:01 am (UTC)SO SAY WE ALL, MY GOD. But yeah -- there is absolutely so much going on that we don't know about. I love that this show doesn't do exposition, but it makes it very hard to figure out what we're supposed to be inferring.
(I also want all the fic of Malcolm and Vanessa collapsing into each other into a sort of neutron-star intensity of EMOTION post-finale but that might just be me?)

Date: 2014-07-08 03:04 am (UTC)And what's up with Victor? Surely he has to know that Ethan is going to find out he reanimated Brona and be really upset about it. I just think if he had any sense of self preservation, he'd have picked Anybody Else. LOL I was digging their big bro/little bro shenanigans too.

Date: 2014-07-08 03:09 am (UTC)OH GOD YES. (I may have already noted that I ship it? I ship it so hard. In that horrible collapsing incestuous can't-get-to-the-end-of-each-other way.)
... I don't think Victor has any sense of self-preservation. Period. I also hope Dead Brona hits Caliban with a vase, or something.

Date: 2014-07-19 04:59 am (UTC)Heeee! I was all "There is no Vanessa, only Zuul!"
I found Dorian soooo creepy. It was unclear to me if he was supposed to be mind-whammying people into sex or just have off-the-charts charisma, but I kept reading it as the former, which is a big squick of mine. *covers eyes*
♥ ♥ ♥ Vanessa!! ♥ ♥ ♥

Date: 2014-07-20 02:11 am (UTC)I think I felt like part of the deal with his portrait sucking out all the negative traits/consequences is that he gets awesome charisma in return. IDK
I also think I would really, really like it if his portrait is actually a photograph rather than a painted portrait, especially given Vanessa's photograph scene.

Date: 2014-07-20 02:24 am (UTC)Well, I personally don't find ennui sexy, so I didn't really feel his charm/charisma, which made me wonder if it was some flavour of witchcraft, but it might just be me not getting it. ;-)
(I like people who seem like they're enjoying themselves! *g*)
