Date: 2019-03-04 01:01 pm (UTC)I am very tired of the dead moms, too. And I don't want dead dads either.
I've noticed that lately movies are trying to accomplish the same lack of supervision goals with making the parents distracted/borderline neglectful as in Coraline, but I'm not sure that's actually much of an improvement.

Date: 2019-03-04 01:03 pm (UTC)Watching Lilo and Stitch yesterday with Fiona is actually what prompted this pollst. LOL I love that movie so hard.
For whatever reason, I glommed on so hard to that end song of Land Before Time: We can go on together; we know our dreams will never die; dreams see us through to forever, as high as souls can fly--or something like that.

Date: 2019-03-04 12:35 pm (UTC)As far as fairy tales specifically go, I think many also originate in a time when parents often were absent, and children found themselves at the mercy of caregivers who didn't necessarily have the best of intentions. Or even if they did, were not able to be as supported as they wanted. I imagine even fathers were at a loss - back then, the mothers did the parenting. A loving father still might have had no idea what to do with a child or several children. Other adults took advantage of orphans or otherwise disadvantaged children when they were supposed to care for them.
