Serenity is always awake. Even at night when all the humans who make her home are sleeping, she is awake and watching over them. At this moment, Wash and Zoe are wrapped in each other's arms, their breathing synchronous as they dream. River is also sleeping although her sleep is fractured and won't last long. Book is asleep and Jayne. Only three of Serenity's humans are awake. Kaylee is tightening a screw in the engine room, and Serenity hums under her capable hands. Simon's head is tucked under Mal's chin, his cold toes warming in the arch of Mal's foot.

Guo Changcheng likes going undercover with Zhu Hong. She's impatient with him sometimes but never when they're on a mission. Right now they're in a park sitting on a blue blanket eating noodles. Guo Changcheng is pretending to be her boyfriend, and he likes how easy it is to be kind to Zhu Hong, to smile at her, to admire her beauty. She's a prickly person, but here in the sunshine with a vase of chrysanthemums between them all those edges are smoothed over. Guo Chancheng has no siblings, but on these missions, he feels special, like a little brother.
