amejisuto asked: What does your hubby think of all your fandom friends?
Josh was way ahead of me in terms of making internet friends. Starting in about 1999-2000, he became super involved in AOL chatrooms and made a couple friends there that have lasted, both of whom he has gone to visit and have come to visit us over the years. So he understands my fandom friends are real friends and has never been derisive about it the way some spouses who are not in fandom can unfortunately be. He's met a few of my online friends (
executrix,
hermionesviolin, and
crazydiamondsue) and thinks they are as cool as I do.
This is only tangentially related to the question, but I wish I could get him interested in writing. He is so witty and funny; I think he would be a really good writer of fiction or creative nonfiction, but he is negative percent interested. LOL Which is fine. I just think we're all missing out. His Iron Fist crack fic would take the fandom by storm!

The Dandy: Brummell to Beerbohm by Ellen Moers
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This is absolutely fantastic. Moers has a very engaging authorial voice, and the book is fun to read.
I especially enjoyed learning more about Max Beerbohm as he wrote one of the few pieces of criticism on Ouida (More 1899).
My one criticism is that Moers doesn't translate any of the extensive French quotes she includes.

Date: 2021-01-17 01:25 pm (UTC)I'm glad Josh is understanding. I'd love to see anything he'd written, just to get to know him more but I understand having zero interest in writing. That sucks because while I've not watched Iron Fist, I'd love to read some crackfic of it. LOL.

Date: 2021-01-18 01:04 pm (UTC)He loves to read, and wanting to write seems to be the natural evolution for someone who loves to read, but no dice. LOL

Date: 2021-01-17 05:39 pm (UTC)Oh, man, I looked for that book on the Dandy when I was deep in Regency research. Glad to hear it's good.

Date: 2021-01-18 01:05 pm (UTC)I really enjoyed it, and I think you would, too. Do you want me to send it to you? It would be a loaner because I want to keep it, but I'd be happy for you to read it.

Date: 2021-01-18 01:07 pm (UTC)Yes, she applied only to GA schools. She gets free tuition in GA because of her grades, and it just seems ridiculous not to take advantage of that.
I'm also of the mind that where you go for undergrad truly does not matter (and that grad school only matters a little and in certain circumstances), so I'm not concerned about her getting into a prestigious school.

Date: 2021-01-19 10:18 pm (UTC)Honestly, if she had any enthusiasm about this process, she probably would be applying to schools in other states, but she is just so anxious and avoidant about the whole thing. I think she wishes she could wake up tomorrow morning and just be enrolled in a school and starting classes without having to do any of the stuff to get there.
