1. I got a wonderful birthday card from [personal profile] lyr, a box of books (including The Beautiful Ones by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, which I am very excited to read) from [personal profile] executrix, and a regular card from [personal profile] 020104isme. Quite the postal haul!

2. This morning the hawk was screeching its head off non-stop. It finally landed right on top of the bird feeder and perched there; I let it sit for awhile so we could admire it and then had Fiona shoo it off. I do not want it to start thinking of the bird feeder as its drive-through. It's beautiful and so big; at first it tried to perch on one of the curved hooks and kept wobbling comically until it perched right on the top finial where all the hooks converge. I can't tell if it's a juvenile or adult or what. It needs to shut up, though. So damn loud. LOL

3. We just watched Nanette, the comedy special on Netflix by Hannah Gadsby, and I cannot recommend it enough. I think it works best if you go into it unspoiled, but it definitely contains material that can be triggering for some people.

The first half of the show is a typical comedy show. And then the second half of the show deconstructs the first half. Using the examples of the jokes she makes in the first half, Gadsby critiques comedy, and it's so damn clever and so powerfully done. Her theses are that she doesn't want to do the self-deprecating comedy she's built her career on because she doesn't want to put herself down anymore; that comedy has been destructive for her because in order to turn her life into a series of punchlines she's had to rewrite her own story; that you come to believe the part of the story that you dwell in, and since she's dwelt for so long in this constructed reality, she's denying her authentic self; and that while the anger she feels is authentic and while male comedians have made anger a successful shtick, she doesn't want to dwell in anger any more than she wants to dwell in the constructed reality she'd built through her self-deprecating jokes.

Trigger warnings: one sentence mentions of childhood sexual assault and rape as an adult; longer but not very long description of being beaten up for being gay

I love Murderbot. I love Murderbot's humans. I love Murderbot acquiring additional humans.

5. And would this even be a post by Lorraine if it did not include some form of whining about health woes? This is a rhetorical question requiring no answer.

Josh got a bit better and then plateaued in this place where he just feels low-level wretched all the time. I guess I expected the meds to start making him feel better more quickly. :(

I dropped a full Yeti cup on my toe, and it hurts like a mother. It's not broken, but my toenail is a beautiful (truly) shade of blue.

6. Finally, might I recommend yoga nidra to any of you who have trouble sleeping? My foot hurt enough yesterday that I didn't want to do any of the actual yoga as it sometimes requires curling toes under and etc, so I did a yoga nidra meditation. Which was an enormous mistake because I did it in the middle of the day and it just about konked me out for the rest of the day. It was deeply, deeply effective at relaxation, like almost scarily so, and if I ever have trouble sleeping again, I am totally going to just find a session on youtube and do it in my bed. Wow.

Happy Birthday! ♥

We have a large crow rookery behind our house - MG insists I sent them an invitation :D - and the large hawk that tried to take up residence was swiftly driven off by them.

I'm cringing in sympathy even thinking about dropping that Yeti cup on your toe.

Oh wow, that must be so cool to see a hawk from so close up! Less fun to listen to, clearly...

I haven't seen Nanette but I really enjoyed Gadsby's sequel. I think it's called Nathan or something like that? Anyway, really good stuff.

HAPPY BDAY TIME!

Thanks for the reminder about Nanette, which everyone raved about when it first came out. I got about ten minutes into it and it wasn't the right time, but I'd wanted to go back and . . . forgot.

Sorry for health woes. Marty's are ramping up fairly severely and I am not used to being in this mode, so it is a whole new world for me. (Except for eldercare; I know a lot about that from my late aunt and my late dad and a bit with my mom.)

I'm so happy you're getting such lovely gifts! You put so much love out in the world. <333

I am very out of it, so I'd never heard of yoga nidra, but I'm going to read up on it and try it, because my regular bad sleep became even worse through the pandemic.

Also: for a recent flash exchange, I received an absolutely perfect Eleven & Will Byers ficlet that I think you'll like, too: here.

Glad you got the card! The mail has been running slow, so I wasn't sure when it would turn up.

I do not want it to start thinking of the bird feeder as its drive-through.

Hee!

I've had Nanette on my Netflix list for so long. *prods self into actually watching it*

Happy almost birthday, love! Glad you're getting more treats!

Whoa. You got to see a hawk up close. How lucky! Although I agree with you shooing it away, you don't want the little birds to be what's for dinner.

You're not whining about your health woes, there's a big part of your life unfortunately and so you're going to talk about it. I'm sorry Josh isn't feeling good still, and that your toe got smashed. Hopefully, both will get better soonish.

Have any big plans for your birthday?

I hope your toenail doesn't fall off too! That sounds gruesome!

Glad you're doing something you like tomorrow, even if you are at home! Best wishes for the day!

It sounds like you had a lovely birthday, except for your poor smushed toe! I hope Josh sees some improvement soon.

I shall look into yoga nidra.

Nanette absolutely is An Experience. I'm a huge fan. Talk about speaking truth to power in that context. I would also recommend her newer show Douglas (also on Netflix) which focuses on her experience of autism. Also, extremely good.
