1. We got a kitty! His name is Sammy, and he is adorable.

I was resistant to getting a cat for a long time for a lot of reasons, but I'm so glad we got Sammy. He is so cute and sweet. All the kudos to The Rescue Ranch; their foster team did such a good job with him. Some of it is just his temperament, but he's been socialized really well and has all the basics of house training and being a part of a family down. I expected him to yowl all the way home from town in the carrier (it's about a 45 minute drive), and I expected him to burrow up under a bookshelf and not come out for several days. But he didn't make a peep on the drive, and he bopped up in the house like he's always lived here, and he's been so nonchalant about it all. It has already done my mental health wonders to pet on a kitty and talk nonsense to a kitty, and I'm really happy.
He's a little sneezy and wheezy, so we're taking him to the vet on Monday (that was the soonest they could get us in; if we thought it was serious, we'd get him in somewhere else quicker) just to be sure he's alright. He's also got terrible breath which could be because he's teething or from his little cold, but I want to get that checked, too.
Another thing that has delighted me is that I'm super into nature shows and vet shows right now, and one of our favorites is Critter Fixers based on this vet with three branches in middle GA near us. Critter Fixers partners with Rescue Ranch to do the vet part of their animal rescue, so in Sammy's adoption papers, Dr. Hodges has signed off on all his shots. <3
2. In other excellent news, I was looking at the introduction to the new edition of the textbook I'm using for a second session class I'm teaching later this semester and saw my own name with thanks for helping to prepare this latest edition. And I was all, "Oh right. I did do that." LOL In my defense, the helping was four years ago, and the new edition just got published in 2021. But hurray, more stuff for my annual evaluation. Which is due on Friday. *cracks knuckles*

Date: 2022-02-01 10:50 pm (UTC)If he's been in a shelter, unfortunately a lot of cats come out of shelters with a bit of upper-respiratory something-or-other. All those cats together, all pee, all the dust, all the stress. I'm sure he's just got a kitty-cold/mild infection kind of thing that'll clear up in no time.
Most cats have awful, awful breath (carnivores), but it's good to get it checked, anyway, in case he's got a bad tooth. Cats can be a gigantic pain (I'm looking at you, Oliver, and your habit of puking on my bed), but also they are just...the bestest, snuggliest, most wonderful little furballs ever. :D

Date: 2022-02-03 10:50 am (UTC)He's clearly not terribly sick because he's eating and drinking and playing, but I definitely want to get it cleared up.
He is so affectionate. I can feel my mood just lifting. :)

Date: 2022-02-03 10:55 am (UTC)I don't think the cough is anything bad; he's eating and drinking and playing. I just want to get it gone now rather than waiting for it to resolve on its own.
Thank you for the well wishes. I just wish it would write itself. That's the tedious part. Ha!

Date: 2022-02-02 03:32 am (UTC)Labbydog icon used because he was unfailingly sweet to/chill with cats, where the kitty in the cat icon I have was not always such a fan of her own kind.

Date: 2022-02-03 10:58 am (UTC)Emma is just going to love Sammy. She has already told us she's sad to be missing out on bringing him home.
He's kind of a gray/brown tabby.

Date: 2022-02-02 06:54 am (UTC)Some cats are just fearless. Ollie was exploring every inch of the house as soon as we let him out of the carrier and just totally made himself at home right away. Most of the others were a little more hesitant.
I hope everything turns out all right at the vet.

Date: 2022-02-03 11:01 am (UTC)He just has a great temperament. So glad Fiona randomly picked the cat with the perfect personality because you can't tell when they're all stuffed in cages what kind of personalities any of them have.
I think he'll be okay; he's eating and drinking and playing, so I don't think it's anything serious.
