Yuletide rec post the first!
Dec. 27th, 2014 09:28 pmI will barely be able to make a dent in the archive before reveals because I am away for the holidays, but I have been able to read a handful of stories, most notably the wonderful story written for me!
Water and Salt
Rome
Lucius Vorenus/Titus Pullo
Oh, this story is glorious! The author has Pullo's voice down pat and also the lovely mixture of affection and exasperation the two feel for each other in canon. I have once again been blessed by the Yuletide fairy. I had a smile on my face the entire time I was reading: canon compliant, sweet, hot, beautifully written prose. Happy Yuletide to me!
You should also read Baby's First Yuletide by
executrix, which imagines that Servalan of Blake's Seven is participating in Yuletide. Short, sweet, and witty as hell--I defy you not to giggle.
Now for what I've read so far. I decided to start at the bottom and read to the top this year. I always start at the top and never make it past the C's before reveals and often just peter out entirely before getting through all of the archive I care to read. So have some recs from the last letters of the alphabet:
Chances
H.G. Wells War of the Worlds, Bram Stoker Dracula, Lewis Carroll Alice in Wonderland
This is written from Mina's point of view, and the writer has really captured her narrative voice. I find her and Jonathon's reactions to the Martian invasion very plausible given their history, and I love their reactions to Alice. Such a great fic.
Inside the Perimeter
World War Z
This fic preserves the narrative structure of the source material (it's told in interview format) and could slot quite neatly into canon.
every map is blank
Tiffany Aching series
This is written so beautifully. I love stories like this one in which characters are contemplating all sorts of futures and possibilities. Also Tiffany is kind of the best. The writer of this story definitely gets that.
