Gentle Readers,
It is my duty to inform you that I have been offered an Assistant Professorship at Middle Georgia College, an offer which I am taking. :) And because the chair of the Humanities Department is pretty much made of win, MGC is matching Waycross's offer! MATCHING!!!!! I was more than 100% sure I would be taking an income loss if MGC offered me the job. *is floored*
I now have less than 60 days in Oxford. OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG
I am so happy.
Again the thanks for all the well wishes and the positive vibes and the occult rituals that you, Dear Readers, employed to get me, well, employed.
Now I have so much to do!!!! I spent this morning putting all the loose photographs into albums and next on the list is going through my closet. :)
So, help me out here, Y'all. I have a tentative list of all the things I think I need to do before we move and once we get to where we're moving, but I *know* I am leaving something off the list. So comment with your list of things I need to do now and later, please!!!!
*smushes you all*

MGC is in a tiny town called Cochran and about a 30 minute drive away is Warner Robins where Robins AFB is located. We want to live in Warner Robins but if necessary we'll live in Cochran.
We do not currently own a house and we'll be renting when we move, at least for awhile because we have to get rid of some of this debt before anybody in their right minds would even consider giving us a loan. LOL

Date: 2008-05-08 05:01 pm (UTC)And *yay* renting. I know owning can be good, but urk, not now :)

Date: 2008-05-08 05:04 pm (UTC)Once new home picked out,
*Get gas, electric, water turned on there & accounts in correct name
* As previously discussed, fast internet! Probably this will be in a package w/ cable and cell phone, may involve changing cell #
* Pick out new docs in new health plan, get records sent from old docs
* Tell credit card companies you have moved, they will get very cross if you don't and will probably cancel your cards out of pique if the bill bounces back to them
* enough fans, air conditioners? if not, buy more
* does utility co. let you choose to get your energy from renewable sources?
* new driver's license required to show new addy?
Old home:
* Get stuff turned OFF and final bills sent to new address
* use e-vite or similar to tell everybody you want to have the new contact info (or make up an e-mail list and do 1 e-mail)
* if you have health ins already, do you have to make a COBRA election until new health ins takes effect?

Let's see....call your new town and find out what you need to do to get the utilities turned on. Will you need a deposit? Will they need four days notice? What? As soon as you get your new address, fill out change of address/forwarding mail card at the post office. You can put in the dates you want the mail to start forwarding.
Call the phone company there if you're going to have a land line and find out the procedure for getting a line. You might, again, need a deposit. Look up the city online and see what the sanitation department is like - can you recycle? Do you need your own bins? If you're moving to an apartment, you'll probably just have a big dumpster for your building or whatever, though...
Tell your doc and get all your medical records. Either get a copy of everything or just have them sent along once you get moved. But them knowing ahead of time will probably help.
If you have any direct-from-the-bank kind of bills, call 'em up and make sure they know you're moving and that you might need a snail-mail bill for that transition time, until you get a new bank account. Unless you won't have to change banks, which would rock. We have to change banks - no branches of our current bank in the new town. Bah!
Start sorting your stuff *now*. Go through a room a week and weed out what doesn't need to move with you. Goodwill it or bin it and the other stuff? Pack it. Dust it, wash it, whatever, and pack it away. Tossing things are good for the soul! And i wouldn't make a list of what's in the box *on* the box. Maybe label them 'Living Room one' or something and put the list in a notebook. No point in advertising what you own. Yes, i am untrusting and paranoid.
Um. Can't think of anything else off the top of my head. Have fun planning!

Date: 2008-05-09 03:15 am (UTC)We will have to change banks. There isn't a single branch of our bank in the whole of GA. LOL
Thank you so much, sweetie.

Date: 2008-05-08 09:45 pm (UTC)I lived in Central Georgia for a good period of time - just north of Warner Robins, in Macon. I know whereof I speak.
Middle Georgia/Cochran is below the gnat line. This means if you have difficulties with bugs, you will have a few challenges. I recommend Skin-So-Soft for repelling the crittters without smelling like a chemistry set.
This also means that you will probably have roaches almost where ever your house is. It does not mean your house is dirty - they just ARE, universally. The newer the house, though, the better the situation, although I loved the old houses, so I put up with them for character.
I also suggest you sell your soul if needed for a place with Air Conditioning. I've lived in Central Ga both with and without, and trust me. it's worth having. (Remember, I lived there over twenty years ago, so it may be as universal as the roaches now, I don't know. All I do know is that it hit 105 degrees a couple of years, and even when I was younger, that was too hot to handle.)
When I lived there, only Macon and Warner Robins had malls, while the smaller towns did not. That may have changed, but you might want to consider stocking up on essentials of the mall sort when you pass through those towns, if you're driving.
And finally - YAY! You're only going to be - what, a good three hours from me? That's close than you've been before!

Date: 2008-05-09 03:17 am (UTC)Thanks for the heads up on the gnats. I hadn't heard about that yet, so good to know.
I think that's still true about the smaller towns. If we end up having to live in Cochran, that'll definitely be a consideration. I hope we don't have to, though.

Date: 2008-05-10 04:24 pm (UTC)My best advice about moving is to try and repress the memories completely. I am not sure this is actually helpful since it means the only suggestion I can offer is to sign up with a national bank with branches in new and old towns. Yes, they are soul-sucking megacorporations. But they are *convenient* soul-sucking megacorporations. Once you are in town, look for a university associated credit union.
Congrats again!
