The Lost Tribe
Who else was pulling for Furlings? I cannot be alone in this desire.
I am saving all my cogency for my SPN reviews. I have another essay in me on last week's ep.
So, randomized list of utter glee. Followed by some more in depth analysis.
1. Marie!
2. The panic in Teyla's voice does inappropriate things to Lorraine's libido. (What's that now, Daniel? Third person what?)
3. "But we did not lose you--that's good."
4. I was right. Todd is freaking old. He was there 10,000 years ago when the device was initially activated.
5. "I don't think this should count as part of the minute."
6. John gave up Rodney. Holy shit. John gave up Rodney. Did y'all see his face? Of course you did. *loves*
7. "I'm a lot bigger than air."
8. Travellers. Yay! I loved the whole running joke about Larrin not mentioning Sheppard and I loved the cobbled together nature of their spacecraft which makes perfect sense given their lack of resources.
9. I totally thought the show would wuss out and say that something on Atlantis was still connected to the device and only their gate exploded, but they kicked it up a notch. I wonder how Rodney and Keller will handle their parts in the loss of life in Pegasus.
10. Rodney. Daniel. Rodney and Daniel. I think I am done with that whole McShep thing. LOL I love that Rodney tries to go with Daniel when he's taken for interrogation. I love that they both go into the chamber together. I love that they bicker and snark and work together so effectively. Srly, I'm all for the McJackson show. Diversioning tactics. "You're kind of expendable." What more could I want?
11. I adore the scene where Jennifer runs away from Ronon to turn herself in. 7 seconds of pure yay. (Jennifer's character growth has been amazing to watch, BTW. She never would have done that in the first episodes she appeared in.)
12. Cool space fighting. The CGI might be a little cheesy but they so rarely show the spacecraft moving in 3-D that this gets a rousing win from me.
Re: Ronon and Jennifer. I really like where the show has gone with the two of them. I think it has shown subtly over the past three episodes that Jennifer and Ronon are not on the same page. As much as I get annoyed with canon for characterizing Ronon as this unthinking brute, I can't deny that it often does. And so we have Keller repeatedly calling Ronon down in Tracker and rolling her eyes when he has to come along to protect her on the mission in First Contact and begging him to stop destroying the engine room in this episode. I think she took to heart what Todd said about her being responsible for the loss of human life and that colored her receptiveness to Ronon (in addition to genuinely liking Rodney). I think she feels paradoxically unsafe with Ronon, as if he either wants her to be this Amazon warrior that she isn't or something fragile that she isn't anymore either. (Caveat: this is me off-the-cuff trying to work through what I think canon is attempting to show us; not me endorsing a particular interpretation of a character.) When she shoots him down--*heart in throat* I love that he instantly backpeddles and it's all so junior high and sometimes Jason Mamoa gets that note *exactly* right, where I am looking at this man who I really believe has been bereft of human contact for so long and who has forgotten the intricacies of human relationships, a man who is fundamentally damaged in ways that are more real and run deeper than Show often bothers with. Those ten seconds were pure gold.

Date: 2008-10-11 05:40 am (UTC)That's my take on it, as well. He wants to treat her as more than just a screw, but he's not sure how, so he's mucking it up in classic junior-high style. Even this, wanting her to be an Amazon -- just Out Guying The Guys -- or the petted princess to protect is very junior high, at least to an american/western pov. Which feeds into what you rightly describe as one of the best damned moments of Ronon this season, and beautifully acted...
I actually like it. I like, too, that Keller refuses to be pigeonholed, and that she doesn't want to be anything but what she is. What that is, I think she's still unsure of. But she's neither a warrior nor a princess, and while I don't think Ronon wants her for those characteristics, that's how he's treating her, and just. No.
These were good episodes :)

IIRC, Mamoa said something in an interview about how he really thinks Ronon is too damaged to have a relationship. So it makes sense that, when given a chance to show it, he does so beautifully. (And totally breaks my heart.)

I tend to agree. What annoys me about his canon characterization is that Show either doesn't show him being fucked up enough for me, or depicts him as fucked up in ways that I don't necessarily buy. Ronon is an awesome, awesome character, but I'm forced to go to fanfic (like it's a chore *g*) if I want nuanced and subtle and interesting treatment of him.
