True Blood Second Season Musings

We just finished watching season 2 of True Blood, and I am beyond sad that season 3 isn't available yet. Anybody know when that's coming out? I can hardly stand it.
In no coherent order
1. I am in love with Godric, and I can't believe we only get to see like two minutes of him. In another post I made,
springwoof said that the lesson Godric has learned in his two millenia is despair, but I don't agree. I think what Godric has learned is that things must change--vampires, humans, the world around them. Immortality is a kind of stagnation. Human existance is so vital because it is ephemeral not despite it's fleeing nature. I saw a weariness in Godric, a great weariness which is different than despair. I think his final act is one of hope. His death is not painful. It is not grotesque. It's not an immolation but a benediction, a blessing. It's a transformation. It's change.
Have you guys ever read The Silver Kiss by Annette Curtis Klause? It's a young adult vampire book written in 1992, and one of the first books about vampires I ever read. I feel a great deal of fondness for this book and its female protagonist; the site I linked to has a pretty good review of the book if you think you might be interested in reading it. I think it knocks the socks off Twilight. I don't want to spoil the book for those of you who haven't read, but I tend to think Godric's writers were familiar with the story. I'll elaborate in comments for anyone who's interested.
2. I like Eric. He's sexy and violent and conniving. What's not to like? But because we see so little of him onscreen up until the latter part of season 2, he's not a very well developed character. So Eric can smirk and snark with Pam. Great beginning to his character, but I've been waiting for more. The moment I realized that Alexander Skarsgard can act his socks off was the second his knees hit the roof of the hotel and he begged Godric not to die. That anguish and raw pain in his voice was hard to listen to. What a powerful moment.
3. I love Mary Ann. I got to talk about Maenads the other day in Humanities class because Dido is compared to one in the Aeneid. In her grief, she is like a Maenad. I can imagine the once human Mary Ann worshipping at the cult of Dionysus in wild abandon, excess and violence, as a way of releasing those emotions without being punished for them, a kind of socially acceptable catharsis.
I find it very interesting that we have watered down the word ecstasy. When we use the word, we mean happiness, usually sexual. But ecstasy is chaos--the bottomless void, the dissolution of self in joining with the divine. It's a destruction, a razing of boundaries.
4. I love Jason. He reminds me a lot of my little brother. Russ is not dumb and he's not slutty, but he shares that endearing brand of stupid with Jason. There's this naivety and innocence and genuine good heartedness to the character that keeps him from being merely the butt of the joke and elevates him from being just a dick. Love love love when he pretends to be Dionysus. That cracked my shit up.
5. I think Jessica and Hoyt are my favorite part of this whole show. She is so freaking precious and he is so freaking precious and I want to just smish them together all day long. I am on tenterhooks waiting to see what will happen to their relationship.
6. I guess I can't post about True Blood without mentioning Bill and Sookie. So. Bill and Sookie.

Date: 2010-11-01 01:12 am (UTC)Yes, exactly! Ecstasy is, quite literally, the opposite of stasis. It's dynamic and moving and powerful!
ETA: Godric! OMG I cried so hard during his death scene. Eric just about broke me.

Date: 2010-11-01 01:23 am (UTC)I sobbed during his death scene as well. He was so cool and I wanted him around for much much longer. *sniff*

Date: 2010-11-01 03:56 am (UTC)You pretty much summed up everything I like about the show, except that I never got into Mary Ann because I kept seeing Ensign Ro and that disturbing stride she had down Enterprise corridors. I have issues.

I think I've seen Michelle Forbes in enough roles (HLotS, BSG) that I disassociate her with Ensign Ro. Angry, angry Ensign Ro.

Date: 2010-11-01 11:09 pm (UTC)The funny thing about Eric is I do not find him sexy/hot/attractive, but he's my favorite character on TB, and his relationship with Pam is amazingly entertaining in every way, whether they are being sarcastic asses with each other, or sharing an emotional moment. The are fantastic.

Date: 2010-11-02 01:23 am (UTC)I do find Eric attractive, but I think at the end of the second season, so many other characters have greater depth. I'm hoping that changes when I finally get to see season 3. I want a nuanced Eric. :)
And I want Jessica to have vampire vagina surgery and I want her and Hoyt to have sweet sweet sex every day and hold hands and think about rainbows and kittens and luuuuuurve.
