I continue to be grateful

We had planned to leave yesterday to go visit Josh's sister for the weekend.
Wednesday night, her husband started coughing. He got vaccinated (J&J) back in April, but he got a test yesterday in an abundance of caution. He got the results today. He has COVID.
I'm so glad he got tested. His symptoms are very, very mild. I'm so glad he even had symptoms at all because we would all have gone and potentially gotten sick.
On Friday, my kid is supposed to go back to school in a district where I don't think they're going to be doing any mitigation measures anymore. None. She's going to wear a mask, but I'm pretty sure nobody else (adults included) will be. In two weeks, I'm going back to work and we're not socially distancing or requiring masks or requiring vaccines. I keep hoping that some of this is going to change in the next week. *sigh*
But for now I am deeply grateful that for at least a little while longer my family is safe.

(I wish the schools were doing their part, gah!)

Date: 2021-07-31 09:48 am (UTC)I was really skeptical about my institution but I have to give them props for last year. Because all of our classrooms were socially distanced and because of the mask mandate, transmission was really low. I'm afraid of what this year will be like now that we're all back in classrooms with no socially distancing and no masks.
I worry about Fiona, too. Her school was "socially distancing" and "wearing masks" last year but like in the most in name only way. I think the only reason her school was fine is that 5-7 year olds are extremely resilient and that age group has statistically been okay (with exceptions and lord do I not want her to end up one of them).

Date: 2021-07-31 09:50 am (UTC)Before Delta, I was looking forward to teaching without a mask--wearing it at other times, but taking it off while standing up in front of the classroom. Yeah, that's not happening.

Date: 2021-07-31 09:51 am (UTC)Before Delta, I was going to teach unmasked, and I was looking forward to it. I'm still wearing a mask even after vaccination, but I was going to take it off in front of the class for that brief time. Yeah, no.

Date: 2021-07-31 09:51 am (UTC)I hope so too. I don't think he even feels bad which I'm grateful for.

Date: 2021-07-30 11:58 pm (UTC)That was a close call - I'm glad you got the news before you left, though I'm sorry he's sick.
We are still moving ahead with reopening but with masks in place for everyone in the office. We'll see how it goes I guess.

Date: 2021-07-31 09:54 am (UTC)Honestly, if y'all wear masks and do social distancing (and don't eat or sing or exercise together), I think you should be okay. I was so skeptical when they made us go back to the classroom last year, but those measures made it okay. That being said, it's not foolproof, and it's still scary. The other thing that helps is everyone being vaccinated. Where I am, most people are not, which makes it worse.

Date: 2021-08-01 11:34 am (UTC)I remember you posting about the switch to the completely open office plan. Those are so horrible and a bane on human existence. They only ever sound good on paper and never do any of the things they're supposed to do in practice.

Date: 2021-07-31 09:55 am (UTC)He's not really even sick. I'm so glad he got tested with so little discomfort.

Date: 2021-07-31 12:59 am (UTC)I hope there won't be any bullying or negative reactions to her wearing a mask, considering many of these kids will have heard anti-vax/anti-mask sentiments from their parents.

Date: 2021-07-31 10:45 am (UTC)We're back at the office for two days a week now, and it's stunning how even with the best of intentions, just the inability to properly avoid unmasked people can start eroding one's caution. I hate it and am trying to be extra diligent now.

Date: 2021-07-31 04:34 pm (UTC)Fiona is such a brave and strong little girl! I'm very impressed with her. And her mom. *g*
Ugh, though, that none of the schools are requiring masks or vaccinations. I hope you all stay safe.

Date: 2021-08-01 11:31 am (UTC)Both my girls are strong and brave. I just fake it. And then get really bossy and bitchy when I can't. LOL
Thank you, sweetie.

Date: 2021-08-01 11:32 am (UTC)They won't require vaccination. I think that's 100% off the table. But I really hope they will go back to the socially distanced classrooms and the masking. That worked last year really well.

Date: 2021-08-10 09:42 am (UTC)I was heartened to see that most (not all, sadly) of my colleagues were masked up at convocation yesterday, so at least we'll be masked if our students aren't.
