So, now that I've got this crossposting thing set up, I think I feel a bit ambivalent about it. Bear with me all of you who figured out how to wrangle DW and LJ a long time ago. :)

Apparently, if you delete an entry on DW that you crossposted somewhere else, it automatically deletes the entry on the other site, which I don't think I like.

And I realize I imported my LJ stupidly. I should have upgraded to a paid acount and *then* imported so that all my icons would be imported to DW. Now, I'll have to add each icon manually once I upgrade, but if I really want DW to be a backup of my LJ, that's what I'll need to do. I wonder; if the icon exists on each account, does the crosspost show the icon selected or does it always just show the default?

I also don't know what to do about commenting. I've noticed that you guys do a variety of stuff: comment on both sites, comment only on LJ, comment only on DW. If I want DW to preserve what I'm doing in case LJ goes kablooey, it only makes sense to either have comments only on DW or on both posts. Opinions?

Anything else I should know about using both journaling platforms? Advice? Remember, technology is not necessarily intuitive for Lorraine. :)

What is the box that says Minimum Security (and you can choose public, friends or private) for? What should I click?

I have a Dreamwidth account to which I haven't posted very often, but I'm starting to think it might be a good idea to back up my lj content on DW. If LJ goes kaplooey, I really don't want to lose six years of content.

I saw in the DW FAQ how to import my journal to DW, but I have a couple questions. I've already posted a handful of times into the DW journal. How will the import work? Will it be ordered in the correct date or will the entries I've already made be pushed to the bottom? Will my DW buds' circles all of a sudden be full of six years of my journal posts? If that makes sense. Has anybody done this? Does it really import all the posts and the comments?

I spent this past week tinkering with my lj layout, and I realized that for the past 6 years, my journal has always looked pretty much the same--some variation on shades of gray. LOL So I got inspired to tinker around with the layout for this one, and I choose somewhat of a departure. :)

I don't really use this journal. I haven't even posted 20 entries yet. I do use it to read those of you who are not posting to lj, but that's about it. I think of lj as my primary home, and I have no plans to leave, but I'd like to use this journal for something, maybe something different and separate from lj.

So, what do you guys think I should use this journal for? (I can't create a poll *sadface*)

Restaurant, recipe, and food discussion
Personal essays about growing up in the South in a fundamentalist Protestant family
Book reviews
Something I've posted about before that you think I should post about more often
Something else?

On my lj, I do not post very much about my RL, so I know that most of you have not friended me for those sorts of discussions.

IDK, just throwing around ideas.

Help me, circle. LOL

Today I discovered that you can only page back on DW so far. WHICH SUCKS RIGHTEOUSLY! On lj, you can page back and back and back on the friends list, but apparently on DW there's a limit to how far back you can page. Most of you guys are just crossposting to lj and so I haven't missed any of your content, but a few of you like [personal profile] gloss and [personal profile] jackandahat are posting here exclusively and I think [personal profile] torachan even snuck in a DW only post too. I am trying to limit my internet time to work on the dissertation and I had thought I could check DW once every three weeks-ish, but apparently not. And now I feel as if I have missed things! *wail*

So, PSA, I guess. Or else, tell me how I'm doing it wrong. I would love to be doing it wrong.

I've been thinking of maybe using this journal for something completely separate from my lj. I have no plans to move from lj as my primary journal and I figure that if people are really interested in reading my fic, they'll go to where I'm posting it. I am grateful for all of you who are crossposting to lj because I definitely don't want to miss what you're writing, but I don't think that's an option I want to use. These two journals feel different to me and I don't want to just duplicate content.

So here's my question for you: what do you think I should use this journal for?

Meta?
Personal posts?
Private journal?
Plot bunny depository?
Something else?

Also, who knows where the Star Trek comms are on DW because I've been posting to st_reboot on lj and YUMMMMMMMMMMMMY, but I noticed today that a DW fic had been linked to that comm and I'd like to read whatever's being posted here and maybe not duplicated on lj. :)

Just a heads up for everyone re: my Dreamwidth account (which is also lunabee34)--

At this juncture, I only plan to subscribe/grant access to my current flist on lj.

I probably won't post very often to my DW account; instead, I will use the account to read folks who are now using DW as their primary account and not cross-posting to lj. I know at least one person I'm subscribed to here is not posting on lj, so I'll probably just log in and go straight to her journal rather than looking at a reading list that duplicates my lj friends list. Please let me know if you don't intend to crosspost to lj or are posting content in your DW account that you're not posting to lj. I don't want to miss anything!

Thanks, guys!

I got an account! Yay!

So I have a couple questions: subscribing to someone is putting their journal on your reading list and giving them access is letting them read your locked posts? If you don't give someone access, they can still read your public posts?

Also, how do I get rid of that openid I was using here before? I won't be using it again and several people found it and friended it. I'm afraid that could get confusing.

:)

Catch her playing on lj instead of doing whatever the hell it is she's supposed to be doing.

Since this is an illicit post anyway and I will soon have to get back to re-reading Gilbert and Gubar, I think I will indulge in a little whining.

I have an extraordinary amount of anxiety over Dreamwidth. I have a really tiny flist but most of it has already gotten a DW account, is seeking an invite code, or seems likely to head over there when the site goes open and live. I don't use reading filters. If I have friended a journal, that means I read it. And I want to keep reading it! Crossposting sounds awesome, unless the comments are split in two different places and then flipping back and forth between two different sets of comments on the same post will be annoying for pretty much everybody involved, I'd think.

People are going to change their names! If you guys are changing your names, you've already posted about that but what if someone whose fic I adore but who I don't have friended changes hir name and I never click on that story by [livejournal.com profile] deaniscool because I don't realize it's [livejournal.com profile] musesfool writing it?

What about communities? Are the people who are getting DW accounts taking their comms with them too? How would that work? If I move, what will I do with [livejournal.com profile] sga_talk? Most comms need to be in one place to operate well. We certainly couldn't split up the convo at [livejournal.com profile] sga_talk and have that be a productive thing. How is traffic and participation in comms going to be affected by a potential split between the two platforms?

And I hate to be the voice of inertia, I truly truly do (although if you could see my ass, that role would likely seem natural for me to you), but I am comfortable here at lj. I know how everything works and what I can't figure out, [livejournal.com profile] hermionesviolin will graciously explain to me. I am not quite a technophobe, but it takes me a while to figure out new interfaces and feel comfortable with them and while all the bells and whistles sound really cool (really truly cool) the thought of having to learn how to do them makes me anxious.

If everyone's going to mass migrate over the course of about a year then while I'm still in a tizzy about moving and figuring things out, I can suck it up, but if this fragments fandom with some staying and some going, I think it's going to make fandom a lot harder for me to navigate and play in.
