Five Things Spike Does With Angel's Ashes by [livejournal.com profile] lyrstzha and written for MOI!!! It's no secret that I think Lyr is an absolutely brilliant writer, but this piece showcases her talent so well. (The woman should always write by request; every prompt I've ever given her has resulted in a gem like this one) Rather than being five separate vignettes, this short piece outlines the five things Spike does with Angel's ashes in chronological order after Angel's death. It's hurty, and oh so fitting, and there's Dru! *bounce*

Fic translated from French! With Angel and Wesley [livejournal.com profile] fractal_bat has been practicing her French for class by writing drabbles and then translating them into English for us. The results are hi-larious.

********

I think I'm going to start posting prompts, free for the taking for anyone who wants them (and how cool would it be if several different people wrote variations on the same prompt) because I'm not going to be writing fanfic for awhile and I can at least feel all inspirey.

The Great Prompting of Aught Six, Prompt One:

I already gave this prompt to [livejournal.com profile] hermionesviolin, but I think it's a good one, so I'll share. Choose a character you don't like in one of your fandoms and write a fic (drabble, ficlet, epic length novel) exploring why you don't like that character--just what it is about that character that squicks you, gets on your nerves, pisses you off, or makes you uncomfortable. I don't mean a character bashing fic; I mean one in which you really thoughtfully examine the elements of the character you don't like. Obviously, this prompt may go unclaimed, but if anyone does write a fic based on it, I'd love to know so I can read.

Secondary by [livejournal.com profile] glossing Spike/Dawn This is a glorious piece of unfic here, a bit of what-I'd-write-were-I-to-write-it. They're both made of leftovers. Afterthoughts, second thoughts, and he's never going to be Angel or Darla or Buffy or Connor. He's no one's son, no one's first. Just like she's never going to be Buffy or anyone else. She's a construct of blood with the weight of reality pressing in on her; he's a monster of blood with the weight of a soul.

Remedial Buffy by [livejournal.com profile] glossing Cordelia/Buffy This is about a Buffy that's hard and a little broken, and a Cordelia whose very much want-take-have.

And I Would Know You Anywhere by [livejournal.com profile] inlovewithnight Fred/Gunn I don't want to give too much away, but this is beautiful and heartrenching. Gunn is unwilling to let Fred simply be dead, and he's willing to risk everything to bring her back.

Five things Wesley never taught Illyria and Five methods of torture Faith didn't get to use on Wesley, but contemplated by [livejournal.com profile] killabeez These are short and written in list form, and man do they pack an emotional punch.

DS9

The Absinthe Heart by Seema. This is Ezri-centric and told from Quark's POV. Very short with great dialogue.

I have been pissed as hell at my woman parts for the past week for they were rife with a womanly affliction, but as of today, they're back in my good graces again.

But enough about my hoo-hah.

[livejournal.com profile] suki_blue asks: If you'd been writing fanfic about ten years ago, what fandoms would you have written in? There's also a purty 21-Jumpstreet icon up for grabs and *cross your fingers* a B7 one, too.

Fade to Black by [livejournal.com profile] lyrstzha Spike/Angel, set in the alley of NFA You know how sometimes you read something and when you realize that, no, in fact, canon did not play out exactly in this way on your telly, it makes you sick to your stomach? This is one of those stories. Every single word in this is perfect. It's funny and so damn sad and it feels just absolutely *right*. I think I wanna make out with this story a little. No, I have not printed it out expressly for those purposes. Geez, I'm not a perv. LOL

Love What is Mortal by [livejournal.com profile] hermionesviolin Kennedy/OFC (her Watcher) Yeah, yeah, I know. Nobody likes Kennedy. I sure don't. But I'm finding a place for her in my fanfic heart, and this is one of those fics helping me along. It's a really interesting look at Kennedy's life pre-Revello Drive, and contains a very moving and beautiful ritual experience.

Snakes on a (Jamaica) Plain Have I mentioned lately how chuffed (thank you [livejournal.com profile] jjjean65 for the exciting Aussie vocab word *g*) I am that Exec is writing Buffyverse stuff? This is a Faith piece, and it explains how she met her first Watcher.

Firefly

Networking by [livejournal.com profile] executrix Mal/Badger I gotta say, Exec's penchant for finding unexplored moments in canon makes for damn fine reading. You didn't think Mal just walked outta Serenity Valley and into the shipyard, didja?

Smutty Simon/Mal ficlet by [livejournal.com profile] ana_grrl This is a voyeur fic, which pings my kinks mightily. Ana says it's PWP, but I disagree. We learn so much about Mal and his relationship with Simon, and most of what we learn is profoundly sad. (Warnings: if you have non-con issues, might not wanna read this)

Eternity on the First of May by [livejournal.com profile] executrix Mal/Simon To paraphrase Exec paraphrasing Oscar Wilde, "They're all down here in the mud, but some of them are looking up at the stars. I aim to hand them a telescope."

BtVS/Ats

There's Fire by [livejournal.com profile] crazydiamondsue Angel/Spike This fic is set on the eve of the big showdown in the alley. Nice sliver of conversation between these two--funny, sexy, a little regretful. Utterly wonderful to read.

DEEE-FENSE by [livejournal.com profile] executrix Gunn/Xander If you like Xander, you must read this ficlet. It's absolutely hilarious. "Family…you know, there's nothing more important than that," he said. Me, I'd call that more of a Compare and Contrast essay question.

Watching by [livejournal.com profile] thelastgoodname Dawn/Kennedy Okay, stop what you're doing right now and go read this!!! I said!!!! It's got such a cheeky *wink wink* narrator, and it's truly just damn fun to read. Go read! Go!

Whose Line is it Anyway

Scenes From a Hat by [livejournal.com profile] claireweasley Colin/Ryan RPF This is silly and sweet and a wee bit sappy. Made me grin from ear to ear.
lunabee34: (Default)
Most of these fics are older ones that I found when I first began reading fic online.

Spike/Xander

Babylon by [livejournal.com profile] tabaqui. This piece is one of the most interesting looks at the way the world disintegrates after Angel and Co's last stand in that alley that I've read. The beginning chapters that describe the apocalypse are written so amazingly--such terror and horror and strange beauty in the world going to shit. I bawled my eyes out in those first chapters (wait 'til you read what happens to Angel), and by the time Spike and Xander find each other, I'm ready for the comfort the two bring each other. This piece also makes novel use of Illyria's character. A must read if like me, you love it when the world ends.

Blood Ties by [livejournal.com profile] amejisuto This MPREG story imagines that Spike and Xander conceive through the machinations of the Initiative. This is not a humorous MPREG to begin with; at times it is very intense and suspenseful but settles in the later chapters into a more light-hearted mode. WIP

Coming Around Again and it's continuation by [livejournal.com profile] yin_again and [livejournal.com profile] wesleysgirl This is a classic and one of my favorite Spander fics--watching the boys try fix the places that are broken is so cathartic. If you've ever loved and lost, this will break your heart a thousand times over, and then put it back together again.

Credence by [livejournal.com profile] tabaqui I very much love this fic. There's such an undercurrent of violence to this piece, when the violence isn't blatant that is, and it's electrifying to read. Spike and Xander both are very fucked up, and at times, their relationship here makes me uncomfortable. This is not the "let's go buy a puppy and set up housekeeping, Xan" version of Spander; it's something darker and more plausible. WIP

Dead Sunflowers by [livejournal.com profile] nasty_shrew Oh is this glorious!!! Shrew writes the best crazy!Xander I've ever read. He's so beautifully shattered, with moments of brilliant cogency. Shrew can write dialogue that is by turns hilarious and cutting, heartbreaking and uplifting. An absolute must read.

Dogs of War by [livejournal.com profile] tabaqui What happens when the Initiative can't be stopped? Truly horrifying AU that is utterly plausible. Okay, I have a thing for the end of the world, a fetish if you will. *g*

Everlasting Love by [livejournal.com profile] amejisuto Ame describes this fic in the following way: Weird weather invades Sunnydale and Xander tries to bring the Scoobies together to figure out what’s happening, while at the same time he figures out that his vampire roomate has a crush on him. Damn good read.

Hero by [livejournal.com profile] tabaqui The lines between sanity and insanity, the real and the imagined, are blurred into a lovely grey fog here. The end, oh, the end. Well, I'm not gonna *tell,* you. LOL

It's Just a Jump to the Left and it's sequel Late Night Double Feature by [livejournal.com profile] kimberly_fan The first fic in this series is a brilliant take on the concept of the movie "Groundhog Day" and the second fic deals with the aftermath of Xander reliving that one night over and over and over again.

Little Runaway, Parts One and Part two by [livejournal.com profile] tabaqui Spike, Xander and Dawn go on the lam in order to keep Dawn safe from Glory. It's such fun watching these relationships slowly develop and grow stronger, both the romantic and the friendshippy ones.

Spike/Xander/Angel

Angst Monkey by [livejournal.com profile] kaygrr Anytime I need a good cry, I pull this out and read it, and sob and snot all over myself. Xander is turned in the line of duty, but Angel makes him an Abject--a lower order of vamp that's dependent very much emotionally and physically on his Sire. Xander is just so pitiful here, and you wanna smack Angel as he comes to terms with what he's done. Well worth the read.

Not fannish, but a list of actual porno movie titles that had me in stitches: HERE

Star Trek

Seeds of Retribution Kirk/Khan by Wildcat One possible, NC-17 rated, version of what happens behind these scenes between these two in the episode "Space Seed."

Kanaar by The Archivist Garak and Bashir, pre-slash. This is a really interesting exploration of Garak's character through the medium of Cardassian cuisine and dining rituals. This fic excellently invents aspects of Cardassian culture that brilliantly illuminate a burgeoning relationship.

BtVS/Ats

She Fixes You by [livejournal.com profile] executrix Faith/Giles Adult The first thing Giles noticed was not Faith's beauty, or her damaged charisma (broken at the strong places, just the thing to appeal to a Bitter Old Chaos Queen) but how very much….larger she was than Buffy.

Weighs Nothing: Five Lies That Connor’s Father Told Him by [livejournal.com profile] kita0610 5 drabbles that deal with each of Connor's fathers. The last is a killer. Really amazing piece.

Sweet, Sour, and Sweet Again (The Monster at the End of this Book Remix) by [livejournal.com profile] wisdomeagle Cordy and Fred. This piece is brilliantly constructed. I'm such a sucker for clever narrative styles and this is certainly a piece that plays with narrative and highlights our complicity as readers/viewers in the narrative arc. Very thoughtful.

Again by [livejournal.com profile] kindkit Ethan/Giles, rated R. Three decades of meetings for these old Mages. Truncated, but all the powerful for the brevity.

Prerequisites by [livejournal.com profile] tkp A poem from Angelus's point of view. Really captures the mood of his voice-over narration of the episode where he kills Jenny. Great read.

As if We Should Forget We Have No Hands by [livejournal.com profile] tabaqui Spike/Xander Adult. Xander has amnesia and Spike helps him to reclaim his past and his future. Tabi always has such novel ways of writing about an old theme. Also, one chapter of this is just pure-d scary, something that's really hard to pull off, I think.

Remnants of a Whatchamacallit Evening by [livejournal.com profile] wisdomeagle Harmony/Cordy The Harmony here is so perfect--so believeable. So funny and yet utterly tragic at the very core, which is how Harmony should be. A MUST READ.

Firefly

What River Knows by [livejournal.com profile] trekgirl55 River and Zoe have a conversation after the BDM. This is very sad, but very plausible. Great read.

Fowl Play and its sequel Fowl Tempered by [livejournal.com profile] lyrstzha 'Cause chickenification is so a word. LOL

Cave Cave by [livejournal.com profile] executrix This is crack-fic at it's best--Wash as the Xander victim of a love spell he intends for Zoe. Will test the structural integrity of your bladder.

Babysitters' Club

Kristy and the Horrible Breakup by [livejournal.com profile] thelastgoodname Kristy/Stacey Oh the voices in this are so so so perfect. Made me wanna go check all the books out of the library again. This fic is guaranteed to make you all grinny.

I decided to restructure my memories so that instead of having actual fics saved there, I will have saved to my memories recs posts with links to fics. Hence this post. Most of these are fics that I read in the first days of my newbie fannishness, and as such, (here lies my great fandom shame) many of them I did not feedback. I think it's not initially apparent that feedback is a part of fandom culture, especially if you stumble upon fandom through an archive or websites (as I did) where you're not interacting with people like you do on lj. Once I'd been on lj for awhile (and became a writer myself!), I realized that feedback is an integral part of the fannish experience. It's an important part of building community. I now leave feedback for everything I read in its entireity on lj but must admit to not leaving feedback for much fic I read on sites or in archives, or for fic in a fandom I don't "belong" to, whatever that means. Like, I've feedbacked almost none of those Trek fics I've been reccing. I know that's very horrible and bad. Does anybody else do this? Feedback primarily to fics presented in a certain forum? Rec things without having feedbacked them? I am rambling!! Sorry.

Star Trek meta question: Are changelings gendered or is gender something they adopt to function in the world of the solids? I'm wondering if Odo (or the scientists who found him) arbitrarily decided that he's male.

Anniversary: My husband Josh and I celebrated our fifth anniversary this weekend which is why I've been not as around on lj the past four days or so. We went out of town and pigged out on expensive sushi and went to a friend's wedding whereupon I cried like a little bitch and ruined the back of my heels with an unfortunate shoe selection.

Spirituality: I went to mass for the first time in a couple of years, and I kept thinking about you, [livejournal.com profile] hermionesviolin, and wondering what you would think of the service, etc. We went to Saint Richard's in Jackson, and I think it's a beautiful church. It's very modern, lots of open spaces, concrete and wood. Josh thinks it's cold, but I'm glad it lacks the cheesy decadence you find in a lot of Catholic Churches. I don't believe, but it was nice to go to church. I find the rituals comforting and beautiful if nothing else. I've also been re-reading Mary Oliver's The Leaf and the Cloud. It's such a lovely book of poetry. I recommend it highly.

Lament: No one but me and one other person commented to [livejournal.com profile] riani1's Carrer Change fic in [livejournal.com profile] club_joss. That's a real pity, too, for it's a lovely story, with excellent dialogue, and in which no character gets short shrift. No Buffy-bashing for this piece.

Recs: Far From Perfect by [livejournal.com profile] nasty_shrew This fic pairs Xander with Cordy, Jesse, an OFC, and Spike and Shrew wrote it all for ME!!!!!! It's very lovely, particulary the vignette with Jesse.

Thaumaturgy TRUE LOVE by [livejournal.com profile] executrix Cordy/River I always enjoy what Exec writes, but I really think this is her best piece to date. It's as close to perfect as I've read.

Everybody remember that we are discussing [livejournal.com profile] riani1's Career Change over at [livejournal.com profile] club_joss. I'm not getting a lot of participation on this, and I know some of you have read and enjoyed this fic. /prodding

Sacrilege by [livejournal.com profile] nasty_shrew S/X This fic imagines that Jasmine's hold on L.A. was not so easy to dissolve. This is bleak and full of despair, but it's oh so pretty when Shrew makes the world go to shit.

Fred Sky at Morning (a SafFic) by [livejournal.com profile] executrix Saffron, meet Fred. Let the exploitation begin. As always with Exec's writing, interesting insights on both characters.

Intersecting Arcs by [livejournal.com profile] executrix This is a brilliantly done slice of backstory for both Mal and Niska. [Mal] wasn't afraid of buying himself a Special Delivery to the Regular Hell, but it would be awfully embarrassing if the clouds parted and a mighty voice announced that Mal wasn't worth the powder to blow him there.

Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me by [livejournal.com profile] amejisuto Final chapter; previous chapters linked at the top of the post. This is the end for HMTMKMKM, and it's been one hell of a ride. The writing is always tight, always a smart and insightful commentary on canon events, and always very clever and funny. She's also written a Cordelia and an Ethan that are true joys to read. It's hard to say goodbye to this one.

Firefly Fic Recs

Pieces Tossed Aside by [livejournal.com profile] ana_grrl Genfic really, although vague Mal/Simon, Kaylee/Jayne. Rated R. Lord a mercy does this woman know how to make the world end

Distracted Mal/Wash by [livejournal.com profile] ana_grrl The first time Mal really looks at his pilot, beyond someone who'll get them flying and who lands using the smallest possible fuel margin, it's when Wash shaves off the rutting moustache. Very well done. Very light and comfortable; a feel good piece

Tussle by [livejournal.com profile] janissa11 Mal/Jayne Adult It’s one of them rare times when they’re dirtside, healthy, and flush. Nobody got shot during the dealings, they got the coin in hand, and Mal’s been uncharacteristically ready to wait until morning before taking off again. Jayne isn’t sure why. They got the next job lined up, no points for hanging around. But Mal says yes when Wash and Zoë ask to head off for the evening, and even lets Kaylee and the doc and his nutty sister go strolling. They head off for the market, Jayne ain’t sure where Zoë took her man and don’t much care, and when he steps off the ship the preacher-man’s still talking with Inara, don’t know what they’re cooking up and doesn’t care about that, neither. If you like your sex angry and violent, this is the fic for you.

Enough to Ignite by [livejournal.com profile] voleuse Inara/Nandi Adult Backstory on Inara's relationship with Nandi back at the Training House in their youth "I just love to make new friends," she purrs. The sheet slips across her chest, pools between them on the mattress. Inara allows herself a half-smile. "A handshake would be much less strenuous," she remarks.

Missing Pieces by [livejournal.com profile] rayne_y_daze Buffy/Faith G She hesitated. In the hallway, she could pretend that it was a dream. Just another nightmare. Crossing the threshold, however, would burst the bubble. It would place her firmly in reality's grasp I love this line about Buffy standing in the threshold, because it always seemed as if she was standing in a threshold to me in the series, always one step away from everything completely and irrevocably changing.

I got spam today from an online "school" that said I could earn my Ph.D. in two weeks. *is seriously tempted* LOL

Random Firefly thought Simon is always the debunker, stripping the mystery out of everything. It's not an alien monster; it's a cow fetus! Space isn't magical and full of wonder; it's freaking scary and all those stars? Fire. Big, big fire. Simon gets to experience very few moments of wonder and awe. In what could arguably be seen as the most miraculous moment of the show, Jonah's birth, it's River that's caught up in the mystery.

I'm not putting this Firefly rec under a cut, 'cause I want all you lovelies to see it that may have missed it when it was posted months ago.

Bao Bei by [livejournal.com profile] tabaqui Simon needs help breaking River out of the Academy. Short Xover with the Buffyverse. Simon fiddled nervously with his cuffs - with the smudged glass of questionable alcohol that he'd barely sipped at. Waiting, and he hated waiting. Waiting for two gorram years, and he was about to crack to pieces. *I'll just sit here and go feng and when these - these mercenaries get here they'll probably steal all my money and sell me to the highest bidder...or just slit my throat...* He picked up the glass and took a swig - grimaced and swallowed and wished he hadn't as his stomach roiled uneasily in him.

Firefly fic rec:

Untitled by [livejournal.com profile] llembas Rated PG This reads just like an episode from the series. The dialogue is witty and sparkling, and the characterizations are amazing. Simon is notably absent from the fic, but all the other voices are pegged. I especially enjoyed the interaction between Jayne and Book. It's no secret I'm a Jayne fan, and this fic really does him justice. There's also the same lovely mix of humor and pathos from the series. This is really a must read of Firefly gen fic. The pile of ornaments covered half the table already. Little paper guns in various makes and models all in red, ammunition rounds in shades of blue, and several large knives with serrated blades constructed out of thin brown paper. The only thing that looked harmless and relatively normal were the perfectly shaped silver orbs. Mal had no idea how River had made them, he'd never seen anything quite like it. "S-43 Axis grenades. They reflect the light," River said, simply. "She's right, they do," Jayne commented from the stove where he was piling a heaping mound of the Shepherd latest protein concoction onto his plate. "Can't even camo the gorram things. Paint slips right off. I tried once." "The molecular structure of the metal is a repellant," River explained.
"Festive," Mal said.

BtVS/Ats fic rec:

A Thousand Tiny Deaths by [livejournal.com profile] thenyxie Buffy/Angel rated PG I belong to the camp that believes that while B/A is gorgeous and passionate, the ship is doomed to fail. I don't think the two of them could ever make it work, but oh I love the trying. This is a very sensuous fic; sensory details abound. The author has given such tangibility to minute details, I can even feel the air around the characters in this piece. She dines on sushi and he chuckles at the way she wrinkles her nose at the wasabi when she gets too liberal a dose. The wine loosens her up and she keeps the glass full, laughing at herself and nearly toppling the table when she spills it in his lap. It's too casual, too close, and both of them forget themselves, lost in the ease of being together again. She hugs him goodbye and holds on tight, her face tucked into the curve of his neck. It's the most natural thing in the world when she turns her cheek toward his, mouths inching towards each other, seeking, meeting, tasting, and gentle questing explodes into white-hot passion, her hands on his skin, senses stinging from the smell of her, the feel of her body, the whimpers and moans that escape in tiny shudders captured between his lips and devoured. This really sets the bar for B/A fic. A must read. [livejournal.com profile] crazydiamondsue, I know you're a seeekrit B/A shipper. You'll love this. Or maybe you'll cry and hate me, but read it!
